Interesting. It looks like the top just fits on with a tight tolerance.

Maybe a container for mechanical pencil lead? okay, it looks a bit too short for that.

Are there any markings on it?

My Grandmother took Tiny White Heart Pills and kept them in a container similar to this ...

It's one of two things, either a snuff/cocaine holder like chug and red said, the diamond makes me lean towards that. The other thing it could be is an old "return this kew if found" device. A slip of paper would go in it that would hold your address. I have one around here somewhere...

nothing is covering the one end so is there a piece missing?

and that is a very small snuff box it is only 1in. long and 1/4in. in diameter

I agree that it is too small for a coke container, wouldn't even hold a half days supply for an average snorter. I had a few old friends who got caught up with that stuff for a while and they always carried more than that little tube could hold.
