Like DCMatt was saying it looks homemade, my guess is that someone created this for a decorative piece or even say an older child made this at school in like art class or something. I am trying to make out what is on the piece but having trouble with that. Did you find this on land that is 19th centuryish or colonial or 1940s type property?? maybe a little more info on history of the site you found it on could help.. It does appear to be very old.
Tough one. Reminds me of an ink well cap but there is no opening. Maybe it was square but it melted. I dunno. Some kind of stamp box lid?
I searched a couple hundred knight buttons and a hundred chess pieces. My best guess at this point is cufflink. Vintage Cufflinks Silver Horses Chess Knights 1950s Mens Jewelry | GREAT VINTAGE JEWELRY
Is the item plated or enameled? What type of metal, brass pewter or pot metal?
If its plated, I dont think its possible to be pre-Civil War.
I'm seeing this but, still think it's a cuff-link....Can't say for sure on type of metal , but it is heavily oxidized as you can see. However , I just checked it with a heavy magnet , and it has no magnetic properties what so ever. Upon looking at it closely , the remaining color seems to be more like enamel. It has no "glimmer" to it as metal plating would have. It seems to have been a white background , but has ambered with red soil and dirt over the years. Whatever , the coating , it is in perilous condition , and even with moderate handling tends to shed some flakes.
With the oxidation , and non-magnetic properties , I would venture that it is a pot metal.
But all readers please do this for me , and check to see if my mind is causing me to see things that are not there. When you look at the reverese of the object , see if you see any distinct features or shapes come to the forefront of your eye. If so , please feel free to highlight them , and repost , and let's see if you're seeing what I see.
Thanks in advance.
I was hoping it was not pot metal. Pot metal corrodes very quickly and it means its not as old as I first thought when I read the thread and possibly partially melted. With the oxidation , and non-magnetic properties , I would venture that it is a pot metal.
Im going with Paleopilot. Now that we know the metal composition, Im going with a vintage cheap pot metal cufflink partially melted, 20th century. In a quick search, I did not find an exact match, but I noticed many with the same serated edges. Large Vintage Cufflinks Castle Knight H019 by EHaskellVintageI'm gonna guess a cuff-link.
