Found in the backyard. It appears to be an insignia. But it strike me as odd that the sides are not equilateral.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is tiny... Looks homemade... My first thought was pocket token for a fraternal organization. Many of them called themselves "knights".

I have not even gotten a glint of information on this thing ! Im not accustomed to even being able to pose a theory , or even form a great story. But as yet , I haven't even been able to concoct either one.
The only thing I can figure without being extravagent is that it was probably some bauble off of a womans sweater from some time in the 1980's. We all remember some of the gaudy stuff that they would attach to clothing back in those days.

But , it was awfully deep to have been from the 80's. I found it about 10 inches down , and the last time the yard was graded was in 1954. C'mon guys someone has got to be able to at least make up a great plausible story ! :dontknow:

Like DCMatt was saying it looks homemade, my guess is that someone created this for a decorative piece or even say an older child made this at school in like art class or something. I am trying to make out what is on the piece but having trouble with that. Did you find this on land that is 19th centuryish or colonial or 1940s type property?? maybe a little more info on history of the site you found it on could help.. It does appear to be very old.

Its definitely a knights helmet. The property was first developed in 1954 , but prior to that it was all wood lot. I believe that there was some agriculture here , but that would have been pre- Civil War.

The individual ridges supprting the crest of the plume on the helmet is what would be the most difficult to have been homemade. The reverse seems to have some ripples in it that make me think it may have been a "pour mold". I wanted to call it a button , but I cannot spot anyplace on this thing that indicates it ever had an attachement point.

I also thought it may perhaps be an old game piece.

I'm gonna guess a cuff-link.

Well from the info you gave me and you saying you found it about 10 inches in the ground and just from the way piece looks made i wouldn't have any doubts this could be from the 19th century and even early 19th century... That being said it could also be like you say some cheap game piece that was made in the early to mid 1900s but it just got a early 19th century look too it. good luck with it! :occasion14:

Tough one. Reminds me of an ink well cap but there is no opening. Maybe it was square but it melted. I dunno. Some kind of stamp box lid?

I searched a couple hundred knight buttons and a hundred chess pieces. My best guess at this point is cufflink. Vintage Cufflinks Silver Horses Chess Knights 1950s Mens Jewelry | GREAT VINTAGE JEWELRY

Is the item plated or enameled? What type of metal, brass pewter or pot metal?

If its plated, I dont think its possible to be pre-Civil War.

Can't say for sure on type of metal , but it is heavily oxidized as you can see. However , I just checked it with a heavy magnet , and it has no magnetic properties what so ever. Upon looking at it closely , the remaining color seems to be more like enamel. It has no "glimmer" to it as metal plating would have. It seems to have been a white background , but has ambered with red soil and dirt over the years. Whatever , the coating , it is in perilous condition , and even with moderate handling tends to shed some flakes.

With the oxidation , and non-magnetic properties , I would venture that it is a pot metal.

But all readers please do this for me , and check to see if my mind is causing me to see things that are not there. When you look at the reverese of the object , see if you see any distinct features or shapes come to the forefront of your eye. If so , please feel free to highlight them , and repost , and let's see if you're seeing what I see.

Thanks in advance.

I was hoping it was not pot metal. Pot metal corrodes very quickly and it means its not as old as I first thought when I read the thread and possibly partially melted.

Im thinking you're right BigCypress. As always Occum's Razor must apply. Is it a 200 year old unknown something or nother ,or is it a 1960's vintage pair of dimestore cufflinks? Unfortunately , the later makes more sense. But , it certainly never hurts to entertain the crazy ideas , 'cause it's alot of fun , and for alot of you guys the crazy ideas have been reality ! Congrats to all of you that have had those , and I look forward to the day of coming up out of the hole slobbering and snickering , and shaking !

HH to all !

LOVE IT ! I saw two concentric circles , but never saw the skull until you had it outlined! After looking at the outline the skull becomes clearly obvious , but unfortunately I think it's just a weird coincidence. But great eyes , and good on ya' for imagination !
