Have I Found My First Meteorite?

Found this by accident in my yard while digging with a trowel. I though it was odd because of it's dark irony color and sort of glossy surface. Took it inside and cleaned it up and checked to see if it was magnetic. I was surprised to find that it is in fact very magnetic. Not sure if its a meteorite or an old metal object that is just rusted beyond recognition. Looks like a rock though. It also looks burnt on the outside. The outside is dark colored and the inside is red-brown in color.

Since my last post I have determined that the object weighs 3.03g and has a volume of approximately 1ml. Using a formula I found, that gives it a density of approximately 3.5 which is consistent with stony meteorites. Rocks of similar density are easily distinguishable from this object. The dark outer layer also looks very similar to fusion crust.

Hello, give it the ceramic scratch test. Is it magnetic? Then try to find a geiger counter to see if its radioactive. Check for scorching marks and rounded burned edges. Is it heavier than other rocks its size? Hope these minor tests help a little. Happy hunting. :laughing7:

Well, I did a streak test on the underside of my toilet bowl lid and it did make red streaks. However, I have read that meteorites that have been in the ground a long time will rust, which will cause red streaks. Also, the soil around here is red and bits of it are probably still embedded in the surface of the object. I guess the last test is for radiation but I don't think I'll be able to get my hands on a geiger counter anytime soon so...

I guess it could just be hematite. It does look like it has some regmaglypts though.

If you scratch it real good on the toilet tank cover it should not show any color after the rust comes off. It's probably Hematite. I've been through this test a lot of times. My toilet tank lid has no more room for scuffing. I had to buy some ceramic tile. If you can grind an edge of the stone away. Approx. 1/2 inch area. Most meteorites will show a silvery substance inside. Lots of it. If it passes that test send it to a professional.

Unfortunatly that is not a winner winner chicken dinner. Definitely a cool find but that is a piece which was worked by machines while hot. I believe thats the top of a railroad spike.
A iron meteor will be grainier than that. Less of the corrosive rusting. You never know though. Always keep those finds.
