About the size of a nickel. Dug this in a curb strip in old part of town. Seems like I've dug one of these in the past elsewhere. Looks like tacks on the back. I don't know.
I think you are on the right track, as pins and prongs on the back usually indicated it was attached to leather or heavy fabric or something along those lines. normally I see these style pins with a backer to hold the piece on and usually a single pin on this size(they even have the detent rings on the pins that the backers holds onto), but the pins look intentionally bent down as if that was the method of attachment.
