I was told they were given for patriotic service for purchacing bonds that financed the war effort. I'm not sure. Thanks!

I've seen them on Ebay also. But, your's has a name engraved in it. Others I've seen didn't. I bet the engraved name is of who owned. I've used the internet to find people, or relatives of objects I've found to return them to their owners. The last item was a pet, or dog tag from 1953. The dog's name was Queeny. I found her former owners about 8 miles from where they lived when they owned Queenie. The gentleman was in his late 80's and his wife was in her mid 80's. They were thrilled to get a reminder of their beloved pet. It was even a bigger thrill to get the tag back to them.
