I found a very toasted one piece pewter button that measures about 19mm - 20mm and looks like the mock-up version below.
I think it is a Revolution era button, but can't find it in any of my books. I have tried to photograph it, but can't seem to capture what can be seen with the naked eye. I am not sure if the 13 "dots" are stars or dots on the button.

I've never seen that version of US button, in real-life, in books, nor online. You've probably had sufficient contact with the civil war relic-collecting community here in Virginia to know about William Leigh. In my opinion, he is "The Man" on American military buttons.
