The tale of a legendary Nazi ghost train carrying gold which allegedly disappeared without trace in the dying days of the Second World War has taken a new twist.

Two men have filed a “finder's claim" with a district council in Poland for an “armoured train” carrying precious metals, fuelling speculation the mysterious train has been located.

The claim was filed in the south-west Polish town of Walbrzych and could put an end to 70 years of rumour, myth and fruitless treasure hunts for the ghost train.

According to local media reports, two claimants - a Pole and a German - say they have found a 500-foot long “armoured train” with gun platforms and a cargo of “precious metals”.

The claim was lodged because under Polish law treasure finders can keep 10 per cent of the value of their find.

It is believed that towards the end of the war, as the Red Army closed in on the city of Wroclawhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...sian-women-as-they-freed-them-from-camps.html, Nazis loaded a train with gold and other treasure and sent it south west.

"Lawyers, the army, the police and the fire brigade are dealing with this,” Marika Tokarska, an official at the Walbrzych district council, told Reuters.
“The area has never been excavated before and we don’t know what we might find.”

According to local legend, the train vanished after heading into mountains straddling the current Polish-Czech border.
“In the region we actually two gold train stories,” Joanna Lamparska, a local historian, told Radio Wroclaw.
“One is supposed to be under a mountain and the other somewhere around Walbrzych.
"But no one has ever seen documentary evidence confirming the existence of such trains."
Other historians point out that the Nazis dug miles of tunnels in the south-west mountains of what is now Poland in one of the biggest construction projects in the history of the Third Reich.
The reason for the tunnels remain shrouded in mystery, and some believers in the ghost train argue the Germans may have excavated secret railway stashes and hidden the loot in one of them for safe keeping.

The value of its cargo may also explain the lack of documentation of the train as the Germans could have put secrecy before paperwork, they say.

How the gold came into the Nazis' posession also remains unclear. It has been suggested the treasure is linked to the Nazis’ monumental wartime looting spree, which stripped museums and private houses of their artworks.

Walbrzych local government has refused to comment on the matter other than to ask the claimants to come forward and give the location of the apparent find as it may have been boobytrapped with mines.
Taduesz Slowikowski, a treasure hunter who has searched for the missing train, said he was sceptical that the alleged find in southern Poland would still contain the treasure.
“They may have found the train, but not the gold,” he told Radio Zet, a Polish national radio station.

The Red's unloaded that thing long ago.

Perhaps the two guys that found it know what is on board, which is why they are negotiating for a 10% cut. A local Polish News Site says "...the train contained up to 300 tonnes of gold, as well as a batch of diamonds, other gems and industrial equipment". One of the guys is German and they are speculating that he may be a descendant of one of the Nazi's that hid the train.

I can't wait to see how this plays out... So cool...

Folks,

Should be a fun story to follow if this turns out to be legit.

Given that this stuff was looted mostly from Jewish people odds are the proceeds will be contested by heirs and the lawyers will have a field day fighting this one out in court for years.

Well, we WILL see what happens.

If there is treasure recovered, at the very least we can all go:

"OOOOOOOOO IT IS WORTH FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS.....WOW!!!!"

:D

A train HAS been found.....

Nazi Treasure Train Hunt: Significant Find Confirmed in Poland - NBC News

WALBRZYCH, Poland — A military train of historical significance has been found but it isn't clear whether it includes Nazi carriages laden with gold as a treasure-hunting duo claims, local officials in Poland said Wednesday.

"The city [of Walbrzych] is full of mysterious stories because of its history," the town's deputy mayor Zygmunt Nowaczyk told journalists at a press conference. "Now it is formal information — [we] have found something."

Arkadiusz Golebiewski, a press officer for the local government, confirmed that a military train had been discovered in Walbrzych, which is near Poland's border with the Czech Republic.
The find came to light last week when authorities announced that two unidentified tipsters were claiming they had located a Nazi train.

Marika Tokarska, a Walbrzych city council official, said Thursday that the pair had informed authorities via a lawyer that they would reveal the location of their alleged find only if they were guaranteed to eventually receive a finders' fee of 10 percent of its value.
Towards the end of World War II, the Nazis built many military installations underground to protect them from Allied air raids. According to local legend, a German military train carrying guns and valuables went missing inside one such tunnel during the advance of the Soviet Army towards Berlin in 1945.
A tour guide in Walbrzych's Ksiaz Castle told NBC News that rumors of a Nazi treasure train had circulated in the region for years. "

Some believe that a top Nazi commander put stolen gold and bank deposits from Warsaw in one place, probably on a train that left the city toward the end of the war", Mateusz Meissner added.

"Where that train went next was a mystery", the guide said.

"During World War II the German army dug a lot of tunnels in the area," Meissner said. "What we know is they tried to convert the castle into a hotel for Hitler's officials during the war and Hitler had to be safe so they made tunnels underneath."
He added: "This is only a theory but a logical one: They wanted to hide [the train] in the huge tunnels because the tunnels are up to 5 meters [16 feet] high so the train would fit perfectly."

hmmm 10% or take 10% in metals and then get the other 10% while bathing like Mr. T im gold rings and chains.... Hmmm, tough choice

The train was documented as making it into Spain, on it's way to Gibraltor. Archives suggest that the British diverted it to Portugal.
What they have found in Poland is artwork, which family claimant's will occupy the Polish court system for some time.

The Telegraph link has some new info that is interesting. They said in a news conference that a death bed confession revealed the location which was then verified by ground penetrating radar. The train is 100 meters long and armored.

hmmmm!, a deathbed confession that was true

The treasure is stuff the Nazis ym"sh stole from my brethren. Stolen property can not be considered treasure. It needs to be returned to the rightful owners.
If they are no longer living, figure something else out. No one would consider keeping a treasure they found in a park if they realized it was stolen goods. Just pointing this fact out.

There is also some speculation that it may contain the fabled Amber Room looted from Russia....
