Dug harmonica reed this AM around where an old homesite once stood. Fitting as the heat was giving me the blues. Not sure what it is made of. Thanks for viewing IMG_0443.jpeg

nice, I almost always get those around old house sites and cellar holes. I usually throw them out, unless they are complete. It should mean there are great targets near by.

Thank you DE!!! That’s quite an assortment. I would keep this if I had a sense of the time period. The issue I’m having is that the site that I am on was inhabited from turn of century through the 40s-50s. Either way I appreciate your reply!

I never throw away a plate if the majority of it is there. I enjoy studying the vast variety of them.. there is much that can be learned.

yeah thats only from one weekend hunt. You will find all sorts. I consider it a good sign. Usually it means 1800's for me.

For sure i get that. But where do you keep all this stuff? do you rent out a storage unit just for you finds. LOL
Im only 3 years into detecting and ive got boxes of stuff, and i have thrown away a lot. I try to at least ID it before i make that choice though.

That is a real problem .. I have 55 years worth of stuff in my garage as well as an outbuilding. I absolutely dread the thought of sorting it all and disposing of it before I croak.

I believe that some accordions had similar reed plates. Maybe they were larger; either way, good stuff.👍🏼

Nice find! I have found a few of those and I always hang on to them. I wish there was a way to date them.

I see people making displays of such items and selling them on market place ,take a bucket full to a relic shop to see if they want to buy any of it , scrap yards will buy sorted metals as well.

That's an early version of Reed.
When I dig parts of these I thinking that I'm on the old.
Typically the later ones are brass.
Not sure really what yours is made of, some type of lead I've always assumed. Brittle that's for sure.

Yellow 70/30 brass.
Same type of brass as shell casings, zippers, picket watches.
Most go into the brass bucket for scrap if bent, broken.
Artisans like the finds also, making widgets out of the dug articles.

Thanks as always for the insight pepper!

There is ... sort off ... Look at any remaining reeds very carefully, under a loupe if necessary, to see if there are any horizontal marks on them. If there are, the very earliest they could possibly be is 1878, but even that is unlikely. Be more like 1880 or later.
