I know the balls fit in the calf's nostrils...wonder what the spikes are for? Possibly to keep the calk from nursing? If so, then I wonder how the thing stayed in place!

So if the balls went in the calf's nostrils did the spikes poke the mother when the calf tried to nurse?...HOLEY COW!!!

Yep, that's what it is and yep they work too. They're used when the calf is older and eating grass/feed/hay but still wanting to nurse. I think the longest it took to break a calf from nursing was like 2 weeks.
