I love metal detecting I really do but I don't love the headache. I mean we research, we ask for permission, we respect property but we are looked down upon. I just don't understand it why does metal detecting piss so many people off. I truly think some people are delighted that we can't enjoy our hobby. I have heard of people who got in trouble for DESTROYING HISTORIC HERITAGE.Huh? If anything we preserve it. Big companies commonly destroy or burn down historic structures if they get in the way of whatever they are doing. Do they get any complaint for that? Nope they have tons of money so naturally it's ok for them to destroy history. I love history and I think most others in this hobby do too. In fact not only do we respect property we also aid law enforcement, we return lost rings, and we remove harmful trash from ever getting stepped on. I've removed tons of nails that could've been stepped on and so have others so if anything we should get paid to do this. Other hobbyists; basketball players, baseball players, surfers, no one gives them a hard time. We also are looked at like aliens or some other being. What is so strange about it. I've seen people talking to the air but they don't get nearly as much attention as me. Oh when will this headache end.

IVE ONLY HAD A FEW PEOPLE ACT NEGATIVELY - MOST PEOPLE SEEM VERY INTERESTED ACTUALLY - ACTUALLY TOO INTERSTED
THEY WALK IN FRONT OF ME AND BUG THE HECK OUT OF ME A LOT OF THE TIME- OR TELL THEIR KIDS - "LOOK WHAT HE'S DOING - GO ASK HIM WHAT HE'S FINDING" AND THEIR KIDS FOLLOW ME FOR AN HOUR AND GET IN THE WAY AND ASK 100 QUESTIONS
I HAVE FOUND AND RETURNED MANY ITEMS - AND IF I DO IT IN VIEW OF MANY OTHERS (USUALLY ON BEAHCES)- USUALLY GET OVATION AND LOTS OF SMILES AND SOMETIMES LOTS MORE QUESTIONS
IVE AIDED POLICE BEFORE TOO - IVE DONATED TO MUSEUMS
ID SAY FOR ME ITS BEEN MORE POSITIVE THAN NEGATIVE
I HAVE HAD A FEW WHISPER "HE SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO DO THAT HERE"- WITH A SNEER
THEY THINK I CANT HEAR THEM - ONE TIME I TOLD A SNOTTY WOMAN THAT SAID THAT - "HEY - YOU SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO BE IN PUBLIC WITH THAT FACE" "YOURE SCARING THE CHILDREN" =SHE HAD THAT HOME ALONE MCAULKIN LOOK ON HER FACE - SHE DIDNT HAVE A COME BACK AND I WENT ON MY WAY
==I TOOK CRAP ALOT OF MY LIFE - I DONT ANY MORE

Found one of those 8 inch or better aluminum nails in the wood-chipped area of a new play set yesterday, bet someone could have had their day ruined by that!

If you are different or doing things others don,t understand maybe its a defense of their sense of normalcy that makes your actions bother them.
We know parks can be hunted without ruining them but many are off limits due to the actions of a few diggers who don,t care or just because of preconceived notions.
Landowners and people in charge of properties often err on the side of caution. Some one wanting to detect may invade privacy or bring visions of craters.
Who litters parks beaches and other peoples properties? Yet no one is stopping them. Being a minority can bring scrutiny but I don,t hunt feeling looked down on. Different yes but the majority of people are just curious and if they say anything it's "finding any thing good?,what are you looking for?(anything older than myself) often followed by whats the oldest or best thing you ever found?"
If they linger and want to chat I usually tell some history of the site and they view it a little differently than they did earlier if not knowing its past, which usually few do.

Its the typical liberal, big government attitude.

"WE don't see why you should metal detect, so you can't do it."

"WE don't see why you should own a gun, so you can't."

"WE don't see why you should want a 64 oz Big Gulp soda, so you can't buy one."

"WE know better than you do what's best for you."

"WE are the government, and we're here to help."

But then someone will surprise you completely out of the blue and even offer to let you detect their land, this has happened about four times for me this year alone. most don't think that you will find anything but nails but they are also curious as well. There has been times where I wanted to beat my head against the wall for a place to detect only to have a person suggest a spot to me. you just don't know what the new day will bring, I hope it gets better for you soon.

no I'm not necessarily saying every person is mean about it just that if a normal person saw someone playing basketball they wouldn't care but if they saw someone metal detecting they would feel the need to come over and stare and I am fine with people but sometimes i just like peace and quiet. I just wish it was easier for us.

Thats right! I actually met someone when I was in New York a couple years back who offered to let me hunt his property and now if I go back there I have somewhere to hunt. But overall I just feel that people should mind their own business unless they wanted to be friendly

I think that some look at us as scavengers. Profiting off of someone else's misfortune. That we are like a crow or pigeon cleaning up the mess and it is distasteful to them.

Tiburcio , if the point of your post is about public land (versus private land ), then my solution is simple : hunt at such times as when those type lookie lous are not present . Out of site is out of mind . Especially for turf where a metal detector has admitted connotations . Even if it means hunting at odd/off hours. ;)

Well It's not the point of the post exactly it's just that I feel that we shouldn't have to hunt at such times even though I usually do because it's just as normal a hobby as anything else of least to me it is.

Tiburcio, naturally NONE of us likes it. We would ALL love it red carpets were rolled out for us, and archies welcomed us with open arms . But it ain't gonna happen . Thus if someone "doesn't like it", I'm not going to run around trying to get that lone individual's love and approval . I will simply do my best to avoid him.

Is that right or fair ? No . But we've all chosen an oddball hobby with connotations . Thus so be it.

I guess I agree in the end but I'm not expecting red carpets just acceptance.Hopefully someday we will seem more normal. I like that attitude though of not caring if a million eyes are staring but sometimes it can be difficult.:)

For one we are not as well backed financially or powerfully as the sports world and there for not as positively promoted.

We have a few of some of the most powerful archeologist hating us because we save pieces of history and they have a need for total control over everything complex

Most if not all of us have looked for things for others weather they be friends, strangers, police, etc. and most often not much attention is paid to our good deeds. No news feed when we are saving humanity from it's self, one nail, bottle cap, piece of rusted metal, hypodermic needle (yes I have found those), etc at a time.

Face it we remain a "dark" mystery to the general public. We find and dig up things most people wouldn't pick up off the street! When they ask what our best find is, well how do you describe a toasted dateless LC to someone that is expecting a Genghis Kahn's, Alexander the Great's, or Eldorado, treasure hoard! Here you are, happy about a round piece of crusty unidentifiable metal! Yes there is something just a little odd about us. We celebrate each other's toasty metal finds as if the were gold!
I think with us, we see the beauty and value in things that is not apparent to John Q. Public. You can't explain that to someone that doesn't have the heart or soul of a treasure hunter, we live for what if's and next times, the dreams of perpetual hope, and we are happy.

We have the key to one of the great mysteries of life, and that scares some people.
The only opinion of you that counts is your own, and the only person you can change is yourself. So does some one else's opinion of you really matter....it's your happiness.

Very insightful! I do think only one's opinion matters but if the general population does not like metal detecting or is freaked out about it then more places are going to be off limits. I think we need a spokesperson or lawyer to represent us lol

More like good karma and mind control! Lol
Forgot the invisibility!

Wonder if we'd scare them just as much if we were swinging a mop out there? Lol!
