This rock is light pink to dark pink all over and looking at it through my loop it is made of tiny crystals. Very hard substance. Do not think it is quartz. Pictures not the best, just wanted to share and get some ideas . Thanks to all. Corundum or pink sapphire 008.JPGCorundum or pink sapphire 009.JPG

G, With the normal disclaimer that "it is hard to tell by pictures" to me it looks and sounds like by your description, "made up of tiny crystals", quartzite. It is a metamorphic rock made when sandstone is heated and compressed causing the sand particles to recrystallize. The pinkish/red color/stain probably indicates the presence of iron oxides.

Thanks 3xflyfisher and Jim in Idaho. I think both of you are right as I looked quartzite in Va up and same thing. This rock came off a rock that probably weighs at least 3000 lbs. Does it have any value?

Unfortunately, no. Wish I had better news...LOL. I wish it had value...I know where there are 100's of tons of that stuff.

It is purty as Garden Stone and makes great driveway stone but it's a B**&& to break up.
