Yup...looks like quartzite to me.G, With the normal disclaimer that "it is hard to tell by pictures" to me it looks and sounds like by your description, "made up of tiny crystals", quartzite. It is a metamorphic rock made when sandstone is heated and compressed causing the sand particles to recrystallize. The pinkish/red color/stain probably indicates the presence of iron oxides.

Thanks 3xflyfisher and Jim in Idaho. I think both of you are right as I looked quartzite in Va up and same thing. This rock came off a rock that probably weighs at least 3000 lbs. Does it have any value?
