Happy Veterans day!

Thank You to all you Veterans for making it your personal responsibility to serve to protect our freedom:jim:

Absolutely ,..... thank all you veterans. You all will may never know how much we appreciate your service to this country. My Dad served in WWII, and it was not until I was older how much I grew to appreciate what a time that must have been. It is only by the grace of God that he was returned home safely when so many others did not, and I am able to write on this thread today. I never served in the armed forces, but have such appreciation for all of you that have. I am in awe of the service personell retuning home now from overseas. I am an airline pilot and have had the pleasure of operating some MAC Charters back here to the States (and headed east as well). The ones in the company of my airplane walked on and off to see family awaiting their return. Others were not that lucky, and I keep them in my prayers daily.

Some still need our help, .... please do so if you are able. Below is a link.

I am posting this reply as there is no better day than veterans day to do all I can to help each and every veteran receive the full benefits which they have earned and are entitled to.

But first, I Sir Gala Clad salute all veterans and especially their families who but only could hope, wait, and pray for the safe return of a loved one from harm's way. Veterans deserve far more than being acknowledged for the sacrifices they have made on a single day or two. I am delighted to now see this appreciation from the American people on a daily basis. This is not the way it was when I separated from the service during the Vietnam era.
Unfortunately action(s) by key individuals in the services and agencies of the US Government paint a different picture. Instead of championing veterans rights, it has been my experience that the individuals administrating their programs will deny entitlements by not disclosing time restrictions, being vague , or purposely misinforming you. When this does not work they may make it difficult and even resort to threats and abuse of power.
As history will repeat itself, if we do not learn from the past, I am documenting benefits which should have been mine for the benefit of every Vet, Senior Citizen, or Treasure Hunter who reads this.

1. Be aware that you will lose you GI benefits (Going to school) if you do not start/complete
your education by a certain date. It does not matter if you have been sick, or unable to attend school as you are a single parent.

2. Be aware that your retirement benefits will be significantly reduced if you choose survivor benefits.
I went through three counseling sessions and rejected survivors benefits each time. I accepted on the fourth time when I was misinformed that my retirement benefits would not be reduced as long as no claims were filed for the benefit of my children. This was a lie which significantly reduced the reserve retirement I am receiving.

3. Be aware of Catch 62, when/ if you go into Civil Service. Your Civil Service retirement will be reduced if they did not deduct for social security when you served in the military. If I was aware of this, I would not of given up my lucrative aerospace career to accept a lower paying Civil Service position. It is wrong not to be of informed of this when I joined Civil Service and unconscionable to be informed of this decades later when I not only had to make up the payments in a lump sum I also had to pay interest on as a result of their incompetence.

You may ask, what has this to do with treasure hunting - The answer is everything as this is but the
tip of the iceberg , the portion directly applicable to Vets, and there are many more wrongs.

If you think, that they cannot take away your treasure hunting equipment away from you - think again.
and good luck with getting it back, if you ever do!

My office was ransacked and office equipment ( computer, printer, all software and even the cable modem) taken depriving me of my ability to earn supplemental income through stocks and options , manage my rentals, and prepare and file taxes.

Why? because it was expedient and they could. The police left no search warrant nor was there an inventory of items taken.

Are you ready for this? They did this on the premise that the person who lived next door, might of, I repeat might of broken into my office to commit computer crime(s) . It was like a scene out of the Humphrey Bogart film High Sierra " rights, You have no stinking rights". It did not matter that I am a retired senior citizen who has spent an entire life in service to country. Do you think it is right that anyone would have to spend more than $1,500 in legal costs just to get a copy of the search warrant that was supposed to of been presented? Even though the person who was arrested was convicted several months ago, neither my office equipment nor software has been returned.

As a first generation American, third generation military, it is a deep and bitter irony to be treated in such a manner as both of my parents left Europe for a better way of life, and in the case of my father to escape from political oppression by the National Socialist German Workers' Party which was coming into power.

I once was a patriot, proud to fight and die for his country. Over time this love of country has turned to one of concern seeing our rights taken away. I now live in a life of fear and have lost my effectiveness as an American fighting man through age and fear as there is no reason for this not to re occur or worsen as they have gotten away with depriving me of my inalienable rights " Life, justice, and the pursuit of happiness" and tragically no one seems to care.

After 30 years, I have resumed treasure hunting to recover my health since my left foot is severely swollen from the antibiotic treatment as it was punctured and became infected while trying to clean up my office and reorganize my files.

You may recognize me limping along while swinging my coil. You might even recognize the tune I hum by Janis Joplin " Freedom is just another word, when you have nothing else to lose".

MY Heart cry's for you SirGalaClad.
I have known others that have suffered from similar Gov. abuse.
It is beyond wrong. It has become a nation wide tragedy.
And there are those in the Gov that are good, yet do nothing when they could have.
The true crime, when Evil wins, is when good people know and do nothing.
Never give up Sir GalaClad.

I was a civil service contractor for the Navy as a Locksmith.
I lost some innocence there.
Watch your back.
Stay off the radar.

Getting back on track for Veterans Day...

I was in the US Navy 1972-1976, my draft number was 365, I would never have gone, but I enlisted and served on the USS Independence (CV-62)

My dad was 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima I did a website for him www.hq224usmc.com it has picture of Parris Island in 1942 and battle photos and photos of the islands today, and stories from his men. Please check it out.

The filmmaker Harlan Glenn scattered some of Dad's ashes on Mt Suribachi during the TV Show "Battle Rats: Iwo Jima" here is the full length video of that ceremony. The second video I did was a tribute to veterans with pictures of my father in law Chief Phil Carrigan and my dad Sgt. Leon Padell

Thanks Ben for posting on the thread. What history in your family! Hats off to your family..

I'm L8 to this party, but yes, thank you for service and sacrifice. I am humbled and in awe by the stories of hardship that our brave men and women in uniform have endured in the name of service and to defend our Constitutional Republic from enemies, both foreign and domestic. Thank you Mellow for starting the thread, thank you Treasurenet for giving us the forum to express this, and to rest.. my hat is off, I am somber in this moment and below is a quote that has moved me for years that I reflect upon often.

"... We solemnly publish and declare, that these colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states and for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honour." -- United States Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson
