Well here it is January 1st, and I'm going out on my first hunting expedition with my recently acquired White's! I haven't done this since I was a kid 25-30 years ago, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I've got to thank members here for answering my questions, providing advice, and otherwise pointing me in the right direction on figuring out my 6000 Di Pro that I bought used and had no idea how to use properly.

We've just recently had some decent rain here in SoCal, and I remember being told as a kid that detecting is better after a recent rain because the moisture in the soil makes metals easier to detect. Don't know if there's any validity to that statement, but I do know that the ground is much easier to dig into! ;D

I'll be checking out an old barracks site from a decommisioned military base. My dad showed me a vacant lot on base that has been empty for many years, but when he was stationed there, it used to have several barracks built on it (back in the early 50's). Don't know when the barracks were demolished, though I know the lot has been vacant for at least 17 years, and the base has been closed for about five years, I believe. I'd love to find an old set of dog tags.

Well, wish me luck!

First time out was somewhat frustrating, but fun, never the less.

A couple of observations:

  • I need to get familiar with the discriminating features of my machine.
  • I need to actually look at the meter and understand it better.
  • I need to trust the reading on the meter.
  • Military personnel really like to drink bottled beer and toss bottle tops all over the place!

I went to the location that my dad had told me were barracks, but I couldn't find any evidence of any building foundations. I did, however, find some very old and decaying asphalt paths that seemed to criss-cross throughout. Walkways between the barracks, perhaps? Without any building locations to hunt around, I decided to hunt under large trees that were in the area, thinking these might be resting spots during hot summer days. No luck.

I decided to find some parks on base next. I found one that still had concrete slabs with free standing barbeque grills next to them as well as volleyball courts. I was constantly getting beeps, but every single one was a beer bottle cap. After digging up about fifteen of these, I packed it up and left.

I decided to try a local park on my way home, and once again, I had finds, but they were can pull tabs. After about three of these, I finally found a 1973 penny. ;D

I'm still weighing my decisions on how I should invest my found treasure. :D

I'm going camping out towards the Calico Ghost Town / Mining Camp in two weekends, think I'll fit in a little tinkering out there, too.

Keep at it! You're getting closer to finding something...keep us posted, that ghost town sounds like fun. :)
