back on the 1715!!
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
It was this day January 8 1961 that a group of then "unknown" men braved the waters off Sebastian, FL and found 2 clumps of silver coins weighing approximately 77 lbs and 58 lbs plus 500-600 loose silver coins estimated to total 3,500 - 4,000 coins all with just the naked eye searching the area that would become the famous Cabin Wreck site of the 1715 Plate Fleet!!!

But it took more than just that day for the finds to take place, it was years of research, exploration and getting the right people together.

So keep pursuing your treasure and one day you may hit that STRIKE!

Yes and the guy that found the first clump of coins was Dan Thompson....as he turned over a rock and was using it to sit on while he was digging...and when he looked down...that 'rock' was actually a huge clump of sliver coins...embedded in coral....I remember it well...as he was my neighbor....and he came home very happy that day!

Soon his garage was full of buckets of silver coins...and huge silver plates...cannons...was a magical time as a kid playing with them....

His pic is in the National geographic....story about the real eight...I just wish I was old enough back then to be savy!

Now let me get this straight, you were a kid and got to play with Spanish treasure from a sunken galleon like it was a hot wheels set. MAN, it doesn't get any cooler then that.
Thanks for sharing those memories with us Liverock.:headbang:

WOW, liverock that must have been an awesome time!!
Yes ..did not know what I had at the time...we lived in a duplex on base...my dad was a major ...Dan was a colonel...our garages were connected.....he had all kinds of stuff every weekend.... when they found the sites...huge silver plates I remember..stacks of them....and tons of coins...and he had a cannon in the garage....when they hit the 'carpet of gold'....he came home and showed his his tally every day....my mom would set up the card table...and he would lay his finds out....was really neat...I was like 8 at the time.....and my first diving experience was with him in the breakers at Melbourne.....we found a mast buried there...on the beach....have a pic from that day...Dan was sure it was 1715...still there I think...today......was a real special time as my dad was in the space program, and in the block house for the first astronauts...and I remember many a launch...going astray and being blown up over the beach...we used to find all kinds of rocket debris back then.....saw and was there when John Glenn did his 3 orbits...and came back to Patrick on the recovery plane and....had a small parade..on the runway....my mom made a sign that said

Welcome to earth col. Glenn......was the only sign in the crowd...was in the national news that night...still have the pics from the paper the next day...and if you have ever seen the discovery channel show on Glenn's flight...am on it in the video.....little kid with the sign...! LOL
.. A real special time in history!

LOL
