Sorry, but I don't see any evidence of that ever being altered by man. It is just a very weathered rock and not an artifact.

I'm sure you appreciate all the "its a rock" comments and are completly satisfied with those answers, but though I'd chime in anyway... It does look like it is cupped out on one side and kinda has that used look to it... Could of had early man use but its one of those that would need to be examined in person by someone that really knows their stuff to determine use wear or grinding. However I can't see much evidence of that from the picture... Have you found any other grinding stones that have obvious use that you can compare it to? Is this of the right material?

I'll dismiss it outright as just a rock due to the 'fits perfect in the hand' tag. However before I do that, I would have to consider the area in which it was found. Known occupation site, other identifiable artifacts, etc. A close examination of the rock too for marks indicating usage.

I found this in oldham county, ky in a creek bed. However I have found several artifacts. Nothing like this though. Usually just Celt, points, a lot of flint. The surrounding county have produced several arrowheads, points and artifact I know personally.
Just have a really hard time believe this is just a rock. Granted I know the picture don't do justices at all and really hard to see what I'm talking about and the forum, shape and a few wear marks. But right at the end of the "rock" is quartz Seems to be perfect for a tool, since quartz is a very extremely hard material or mineral. I could b wrong about this completely. But u gut says it something not just a rock..... Thanks for the replays. Much appreciated.

Hi Bradk05,

I have at least 8-10 of that same shape/style rock...I would keep it as I'm sure you'll find more like it. Pic #4 shows where it could be evidence of where it was tied to a handle..the long sideways cut marks..not to mention the obvious wear marks.

That's awesome. Thanks for ur reply. Can u send me or post pics of the rocks that u have that are similar. Thanks.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here. I am trying to help you and educate you on what is and what isn't an artifact. You can continue to pick things like this up and bring them home thinking they may be something or you can listen to people who have collected most of their lives, 47 years for me alone, and learn what is and what isn't an artifact. Your choice.

That is a rock, and to be more specific, it looks to be nothing more than a piece of water worn Limestone. It is not an artifact.

Brad - I don't see any signs of that being an artifact. The lines on the rock are natural and are neither intentional or unintentional signs of usage. It's likely a silicate nodule that eroded out of limestone bedrock. This is the same process that produces the flint and chert nodules from which most points originate. Could it be an artifact? Of course it could. But from the photo I see no reason to believe it's an artifact and nothing about it that would make me think viewing the piece in person would change my opinion. Similar to SRV I'm not trying to be rude, rather just offering my thoughts per the original email. Do you have pictures of the other artifacts you've found in the area?

Thanks,
joe

Hahaha that's funny.
No thank you all for the replies. Not offense taken at all. However I collect a lot of rocks regardless of being an artifact or not. My daughter finds a lot of them and she enjoys them as much as I do.
Just picking others Brains and all.
Thanks again y'all!!
HH & good luck to all this weekend!!
