I found this hammered coin in New Bern, NC, near downtown, within sight of the water, several years ago. One gentleman I showed the picture to said that he thought it was a Maravedi that was re-stamped and that it probly came from the West Indes, dated around the 15-1600's. I don't know. It is made of copper or bronze. The one side, opposite the side with the X, looks like a face to me if you look closely. I would appreciate any help on this one. It is a little larger than a nickel. Bryan

Can you point out the eyes? :o ;D

the face appears to be looking up to your left. The eyes are the darker spots. It is almost like a trick picture. Once you see it, you cannot forget it. Let me know if you still have trouble.

Here I outlined the eyes and what I think is the hair coming down the back side of the head.

Muddy, I've found some hammered coins here in Ireland and I've seen a lot of them from Europe, but I've never seen one of those before. Good luck with the ID! BTW, I am moving from Ireland to the Charlotte area next week, how's the detecting in NC?

It is good, though it has been and is detected hard overall. But there is some old stuff from the civil war and earlier to be found. Of course, it is recent history compared to what you can find in Europe. I have to go for now, HH, Bryan

It is a Spanish Maravedi, probably late 1600 early 1700's. Probably Philip (VI or similar). Someone will ID better, as I only have limited knowledge on these. They were often coutermarked many times. Research copper Maravedi on google....

There are so many variations of hammered coins, I have yet to see one with the X on it that even looks close, that is why I am awaiting news from some pros. Thanks, Bryan
