Nice find. A shame it was iron and not brass.

No such thing as a brass flintlock hammer, brass doesn't hold up for such use. Not necessarily a musket hammer, could easily be from a fowling gun (shotgun) or squirrel rifle (smaller caliber than a musket).

Trust me...its from a flintlock.

Nice relics, congrats! :occasion14:

It's a nice piece whatever it came from - well done mate!

I know it's from a flintlock and never said it wasn't. All I said was that there were no brass flintlock hammers and that the OP item could easily be from a squirrel rifle or fowling gun which were all available with flintlocks and not necessarily from a musket which has military connotations. OP item is not brass either, cannot figure out your reply.

I knownits not brass and never said it was. A musket doesn't have military connotations to me. It's just a firearm that is loaded through the bore...

Very cool find! A nice old gun part or two are definitely on my list of stuff to find!

Why would you put it in vinegar? Doesn't it destroy the whole surface?
I put stuff like this in distilled water for a couple of weeks

From the dictionary: "an infantryman's light gun with a long barrel, typically smooth-bored, muzzleloading, and fired from the shoulder". To gun collectors "MUSKET" is a military firearm. I suppose there are special people out there who think differently. All muskets are muzzle loaders but not all muzzle loaders are muskets. Even a modern rifle is loaded through the bore, just at the breech rather than the muzzle.

Muzzle load...that's what I meant. Not sure if I'm "special" but we all think differently.

The ACV removes all of the iron oxide taking it back to it's base metal...its very effective for heavily corroded iron. Takes a few weeks but really worth it.

So. I gather none of these are made out of brass then? :laughing7: I learn something new every day. You seem to be having a pretty good year Romeo. The belt plate you just posted is amazing. Keep up the good work.
