Wow, what a great day it turned out to be. I missed church feeling a little under the weather. That's what I get for not getting to the store for a month and getting more organic apple cider vinegar. Been taking a shot glass full every morning for the past couple years. I let a month lapse without getting more and I go and get a cold. Doh!! I stayed in bed until about 11 and then made myself get up, get some breakfast and coffee, and grabbed my gear to hit the quarry property again. I had high hopes at first as construction is going on to put in a railroad extension. They've now cut around to the backside of a particular fence where I recently found the nice eagle button and Virginia button. I just knew all of the new exposed soil would produce something good, but all I could find were stupid old cans and can tops. I didn't even know what my first decent find was when I found it. All I knew was that it was a round brass piece caked with frozen, sticky clay soil that I couldn't immediately remove. That piece ended up being a pocket watch back I believe.
Soon after that I found the smallest horse or mule shoe I've ever seen. It's in the top left of the pic of everything. After several hours of not finding much I made my way over towards where the brunt of the construction is going on. I had found a Williams cleaner bullet here the first time I was at this location. I also knew this to be a heavily hunted civil war encampment area at one time. I braved the heavy trash area kind of near the road and finally got a decent little signal. Out popped a little religious medallion for St Benedict--neat! I dug lots more trash and then another good signal had me pulling out an 1892 Indian. Yes! Finally something worth my time being here. Not five seconds later and one foot away, loud signal and BAM--out pops a gorgeous US box plate. Bout time I found one of these. I found the third eagle plate a week and a half ago and then this beauty.
Now I'm cloud nine. Twenty seconds after digging the plate and only 6 feet away another good but deep signal beckoned me. I dug down a foot and popped out another musket butt plate. This is the second one I have found in a month or so. About 10 feet away from that I saw an object on the ground that was half covered by a large dirt clod. I thought " That sure does look like a beat up knife handle." I reached down and picked up the blade shown in the everything pic. Its Pakistani so its junk, but still a cool find. I hope its not a murder weapon. I searched that little area heavily for awhile with no other significant finds.
I then made my way over to an old dirt hill that has old trash in it. At the base is where I found the nice little one piece ornate flower button. A few feet from that I found a modern pocket spill of a quarter, dime, nickel, and a few pennies. Too bad none of them were old.
So although I am mildly sick, I sure am glad I ventured out today. I'm also glad my detecting buddy couldn't go today as I would have gone to a completely different spot that I had planned for us had he been able to go with me. Funny how things work out sometime.
