Hi All,
Seems like ages since I last posted anything - anyway, been out today for a few hours, one of the finds was this odd looking token, about the same size as a sixpence:

Half-Sovn-Token.webp

I can work out the name 'MOSS' - 'HALF SOVN' - and 'RIPLEY' - (Ripley is a main town not far from where I found this).

Can anyone shed any light on this? -
Thanks,
Best wishes.

I see "J MOSS". Also some other lettering beside "RIPLEY". Anything on the other side?
There's also another letter infront of the J. (can't read it) yes and another word before RIPLEY - The other side are the words in reverse as it seems that the token has been pressed or punched - the metal is quite thin.

nice token! crusader should be able to i'd it for you

As the first Soveriegn was introduced in 1816, it must post date this. Your guess is right but I don't have any books on 18-19th century tokens, only 17th century. Needs a bit of researching as there are many tokens issued in the 19th century.

In the 1881 British Census I found a John Moss who was a 27 year old grocer living at High Street, Ripley in Derbyshire. I think he's your guy who issued the token.
I thought it was another letter before the 'J' but on closer inspection it is the remains of a star '*' there's another one on the symetrical side.
No - its not a weight, far too small, thin and light.
I'll keep it safe until I can get to the local museum.
Thanks guys.

What I can't work out is the highest denomination of tokens in that period was 6d. So a Half Sov. is far to high for a normal token, so maybe a deposit for something :icon_scratch:

Whats before the word 'Ripley' & whats on the reverse?

I don't think so. Check this site. http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=11722&cat=215

Apparently it's a 'Loyalty Token' and I think the word before 'Ripley' is 'Grocer'.

Great ID.

As most tokens were given as small change, changing them up for a larger ones makes sence. Just never seen one & its not in the books I have.

Very interesting piece
