I managed to do a little metal detecting in the field behind my house today not for long though I didn't get much but I dug what looks like a coin shaped object that has been cut in half does anybody know if it's a coin or button can you tell it is in very bad condition and has seen better days but help me out people if you can.

I think the piece is just too far gone to ever know what it was. It seems to me that it is not a coin. Part of a button is more likely, but still far from certain. The material seems like some kind of pot metal, no? Maybe it is just the soil conditions, but it does not seem like copper and is not a noble metal.

Could be anything really. Let you imagination run wild!

It's up to you but if it was mine I'd try cleaning it with Extra Fine Steel Wool or Andre's Pencils.
Good Luck !

The patina looks like really old lead or pot metal. I don't know about the soil conditions where you live though

I would side on the button ID.
Looking at the center point it changes color being a tad lighter.
In the last photo it's a darker spot.
Coinage is either copper/brass or a slight mixtures of tin.
But generally this is the norm.
(exception of the obvious gold/silver)
Looking at your recovery it looks like it could of well been a pewter button.
They don't hold up well in the soils either it seems.
A one type drop off of a coat/shirt during harvesting/working.
But there's one thing about it, and it's old.
Very good indicator of history in and around the area.
Well done on the recovery.
