I found this at a 1600s colonial site. I tried to clean with toothpick and toothbrush but it's not cleaning up. Anybody know what I have here? It's smaller than a quarter to me it looks like GW but also could be half cent?

I found a large cent that was pretty much toast a few weeks ago. Only by matching up face profiles could I tell it was a early large cent. Look like you may have the same problem. Mine will remain dateless.

I think dgrs2 is right! I believe that is a half cent too! Just looking quick. I'm trying to match it up. To see if there is a way to narrow it down. Maybe someone with more knowledge will know right away.

Cool find!!!

Hi; I can tell by the face profile that yours is a 1790's 1/2 Cent ok. Try to clean it. There is a Forum here for cleaning old copper coins PROPERLY ok. If you clean it the wrong way you will destroy the coin and any value it has. It appears that it will clean up to be in Fine Condition with Corrosion. The Corrosion factor will only lower the value of the coin by 1 Grade making it a Very Good in Condition ok. Nice Find. PEACE:RONB

I think it's a Drapped Bust 1800-1808....:laughing7: I'm laughing because were all coming up with something different! At least we all agree it's a half cent!:occasion14:

Terry if you are correct. This would be a valuable coin? I just looked it up....how can you tell with this coin being in such rough shape??

I'm just looking at it compared to other examples I've held or dug. I would investigate it further. Great find! :skullflag:

I think it is an 1800 - 1808 draped bust half cent. Try making a rubbing with a nice smooth piece of aluminum foil, this often brings out details that are difficult to see on the coin.

Anyone think a coin dealer would be able to ID this if I brought it in?

Yes, ask them to check it out, but do not sell to them. Try cleaning with warm water and dish soap, and a soft cloth. Good hunting and good luck.
