Half Cent, Infantry Button and "Stamped" Copper

Hello Everyone,
Been a while since we have posted any "Today's Finds" The weather this summer hasn't been the best and the finds have been a lot less than last year. DeArmitt Pa and I got out for a few hours at one of our old haunts. It's real tough hunting due to tons of wasted iron and modern junk in the ground but we got somewhat lucky. This place. if you get a "Tweet" on the E-Trac you better be digging paying NO attention to numbers. This Infantry Button that I found must have been walked over a dozen times. It's a "W.O. Mintzer Phild" 1859-1870" Not too far from that John dug and hollered "Half Cent" ! I was pretty excited for him. The front is better than the pic, just could get a good camera angle on it. A short while later he dug this "Stamped" Copper, I'm not sure why someone would do that, maybe the first step in making a die or boredom ??? It's pretty cool larger than a large cent and you can see the backwards "ONE" and part of the wreath.

nice finds

Re: Half Cent, Infantry Button and "Stamped" Copper

That's interesting because it's stamped, copper? and has a correct letter "E". Could be a very bad attempt at a counterfeit die. The "O" is out of line and disproportional which would also indicate counterfeit.

It's upside down. That's why the E looks correct. I also see part of cent.

Right! That makes much more sense. Counterfeit brockage error. It's easy to get confused without having enough coffee to start the day! ;D

Re: Half Cent, Infantry Button and "Stamped" Copper

Looking again the detail looks raised. Is that just the picture? I guess I'm still confused. Coffee time. Must just be an illusion because the letters all being green like that makes more sense they are into the coin.

Re: Half Cent, Infantry Button and "Stamped" Copper

The letters are stamped into the coin. You can see the dirt collected into the letters. Thanks for looking.

That button is a great find. I've dug about 30 (but only two I buttons) and none are even close to that great of shape. Nice gilt. WTG thanks for posting. :icon_thumleft:

Sweeeeeet pulls!! :icon_thumright: Yeah, like JB said, half cents don't show up much so good job!

Thanks for all the nice comments. DeArmitt has a knack for digging up weird things.

Nice Lookin Button :o
Half Cent is always Nice ;D
Love that 'Handwork' Piece

Re: Half Cent, Infantry Button and "Stamped" Copper

Am I missing something? Isn't the "One" in the wrong position, usually above the word cent. And isn't the letter "N" backwards? Maybe I need coffee as well.

It's reversed on the coin, and the first image is upside down. Here it is with both corrections showing how the coin should have looked.
