about a year ago i go to this bank.. ask to buy the bag of halves off of the coin counter.. they say sure... i score a decent amount of silver

about 3 months ago, same bank.. they say sure to sell me the bag, BUT teller goes through it right in front of me and picks out all the silver (she missed 1 40%).. i wasn't a member so i just sat there and took it

fast forward to now.. i'm a member of this bank (although i signed up at a different location)... i want to buy the bag again... what do i do?

do i:
buy it and then if she starts picking through it.. say forget it? ask for a manager?

mention i'd like to buy it but only if it won't be picked through? what's the best way to phrase this??

thanks!

I don't think she has the right to do that in front of a customer of the bank (you). You bought that bag of coins, not her >:(

i agree.. last time non-member, what was i to say

this time i think i will speak up... just not sure how

I would ask the branch manager to buy it and if she starts going through it I would raise hell with the manager. If they wont do anything for you and let her, turn around and walk out.

I would first say to her that you are collecting coins in hopes of finding old ones (I always use this instead of saying I am looking for silver) and ask her to not do this. If she says no, then I would go get the manager asap. I have never worked at a bank, but would imagine that is not an ok thing for a teller to do. Seeing them in their tray and taking those, I am ok with and would not get worked up about it, but going through a bag?? How can that be allowed and a manager ok with? Wouldn't that take a lot of time for her to be wasting while she is supposed to be working?

last time she dumped them (roughly $300 worth) on the counter between her and i... took out all the silver.. then starting stacking them to 'count them for me'

Like I said. This, in my eye's is unapropriate for an employee to do that in front of a customer. If I was the branch manager let her have it or hit the highway >:(

Could I please buy the coin counters half dollar bag unsorted and unculled?

That is a nice way of asking for what you want and strait to the point. No reason for an explanation any further as the teller will either know what you are after and make a decision, or will not know what you are after and give you the bag like the first time. If she says NO you cant have the bag then you can mention youve been able to buy bags before with no problem, if she says not until its culled first then its time for you to figure out how to smooze the hell out of this woman until you get your way. Dont burn that bridge if you know this place is a good source. Just get smarter. Im willing to bet if you tell the manager on her she will just pluck the silvers from the bag before you go inside to ask for it.

Anyway its a bit like educated gambling. Start with my question and then the process of elimination will lead you to where you need to be.

Last year I ran into a teller at my main order bank that was always packed. Lots of people = lots of opportunity for silver. I found out real fast that an older teller swooped silver in droves even from the other teller trays and I had no chance of getting anything silver from this older teller. At one point there were even rolls of my ordered boxes replaced with rolled clad so i knew she was sniping enders. This was an order bank i couldnt lose as they never gave me trouble ordering and the other tellers were delightful and happy to have me come in. So i had to get smart if i wanted to get silver. After some thought i came up with the idea that i would buy a roll of personalized tape. The kind that has your name on it allllllllllllll the way down the roll. I then asked my favorite teller to save me any rolls of halves that came in by taping both ends and calling me, and also taping the seam of my order boxes. You wouldnt believe what happens when someones name is on something. Anyway my boxes never got tampered with again and i ended up pulling over 300 silvers from this one bank in 8 months from customer rolls and teller trays. My tellers ended up with 8 boxes of assorted truffles and some home baked cookies. Even my adversary got box of truffles. She even came around and gave me a hug. Sure am glad I didnt get my pantys in a wad and do something different. Goodluck

JD, great advice and tips...thanks

The teller might very well have the manager's blessing to pull silver/coins. If I was a manager, I'd certainly allow my employees to do this, although I wouldn't let them do it in front of customers just to avoid any possible confrontation or problems. That may have been the teller's way of telling you that she has access to all the silver, and that you won't be scoring any there. Maybe not to be mean, but just to let you know so you don't waste your time.

I would give the bag another shot, but use a different teller. If the silver gets culled from the bag, politely refuse it and leave. I would begin using that bank as my main dump bank as you know you you're not gonna get any silver there anyway. Can't have too many dump banks.

i can't dump there b/c the other branch which is very close by is the only bank i have to order me boxes...otherwise it'd be a dumpfest there lol

i'll try another teller and just refuse if she picks through it

I would say that this is one of those times where it would be appropriate to go to the management, and perhaps even higher if that doesn't work (by writing a complaint). This is different than when the coins are already in a teller's till.

In your example, the coins are in a bag and belong to no particular teller via their tray, etc. Even banks that allow tellers to buy silver coins would probably not let the teller do things like you describe in that it just screams bad customer service in my opinion.

just went there.. only teller there (others on lunch i guess?) was her... i immediately recognized her and assumed showdown lol

i asked to buy them .. she walks over to the coin counter and says wow .. it's empty.. that's rare... i ask if she can order me boxes.. she takes down my info.. then says what r u looking for anyways... i say, my son and i are building some 64-85 sets.. she says.. yeah i do that too......

i leave to go to my main branch to pickup my 3 boxes of halves and 2 of them are already opened (this is my first order there)..... i ask if these were looked through and she says must have happenned on the truck?? i've never before bought boxes that both happen to be open on the exact same side .. in the exact same way. i'm at work so i haven't gone through them yet.. but i did end search one of the open boxes rolls and nadda

i have a feeling even the tellers are trying to beat me to the punch lol

oh well... 1 box is still sealed...

what must it have been like to do this before EVERYONE was onto the game?!?

wow thats just flat out crass. Next time just say 'look whore stop scouring the bag first, do you think im buying the bag from you for my health?' Then get the branch manager, ask him if it is bank policy for tellers to be rummaging through change to get first picks on the coins for their own personal gain.

just gotta be bold, stand up for yourself and speak up!

i work in an office and was just laughing out loud .. literally... well said

i wouldnt start anything since they ARE willing to order boxes at least for u...in my area its VERY hard to find pick-up banks :/ keep it up and hh!

I would wait until the bag is not quite full then let the tellers know that you are putting some of your own collection in the machine to fill it up and you would get the collection back because you are getting the bag. This in return would make the tellars a thief if they would so happen to pick thru the bag.
I don't think a teller would in their right mind would cherry pick the bag knowing you have put your own personal collection in there.

Grampa,
Why not find out what her day off is and go to the bank on that day.
Just a thought
