Hey there Jeff, I got a version of this which is pretty much the same. It was in a book called (Treasure State Treasure Tales) for Montana. But doing a quick check of their provided facts it is no doubt a North Dakota story. The book I hunted down seems to have not been researched very well. I will be sharing portions over time for all.
