Funny story...

I am still getting used to metal detecting, so I had some free time this evening around 10 and thought I'd putter around the yard with it (I live in a rural area, just a couple of neighbors). So I'm walking my yard with a headlamp and a spade, digging up pop tops and old bullet casings, when my wife pulls in. She works at the local 911 office, and proceeds to tell me the neighbors just called the cops for a burglar in the neighborhood...wearing a headlamp and digging up stuff...:laughing7: She then told me the neighbor had a gun and was ready to shoot the "burglar". :O I'm sure glad my wife answered the call (she knew what I was out doing)!

Anyhoo... Turns out the neighbor had a warrant so the cops paid HER a visit instead.:laughing7:

Hhahahah thats funny. You were lucky this time. Just love the nosey neighbors when I am out digging holes in my yard at night 8-)

haHa on the Nosey, psychotic neighbor Narking & getting herself in Trouble :headbang:

Good reason for gun control!!! Just joking so no one needs to get their rant on!!! Just thought it was funny given current debate going on.

LOL!!!! That made my day! Thanks for the story.....

Maybe you should use a few banks of halogen floods so she can see better. Good grief!

getting to know your neighbors ain't always a great idea. I live in a more rural area, and I was once burgularized and the detectives said more than once, "One of your neighbors might have done it." There was one time where a neighbor dropped by while I was washing my motorcycle in the yard and got friendly, once asking why he didn't see around much and I mentioned I was a league pool player and out most Monday evenings. It was a Monday when I was hit. I have become less "inviting" and open after that. I am out in the yard lots more now that I detect.

and you live in a rural are with a few neighbors?? Get to know your neighbors!

my working schedule only permits me to hut at night (on permissible property)...i get weird looks all the time

On Sunday I went out with a friend to his town and we were detecting in a tot-lot.We got there around 6a.m. and had the whole lot to ourselves. We each took sides and then met in the middle.Well about 20 minutes into swinging I here a "what are you guys up to".I look up and I see an older Police officer looking at us.We both stop and take off our headphones and start talking to him and he tells us that some of the people who live behind the tot-lot called to say that we were digging the playscape equipment up.He realizes that were just swinging coils and "no harm done"

That's a normal story and dont forget that each and everyone that tects will sooner or later meet the men in blue face to face whilst plying their trade. I did a few times (always concerned neighbors reporting suspicious activity so the police ply their trade). My favorite is: Once, around midnight, I am in a great old field that popped a few hundred wheats and a hundred silver coins including barber stuff and at least twenty silver rings and one gold and a class ring I returned yaddy yaddy da it was about 78 degrees F on the weekend. I see the car (patrol car) pull up and I sees the cop get out and start walking toward me. I walked toward him and we met basking in an eery glow of midsummer night street light amongst the shadows of huge maples bursting with green leafs and stuff. He speaks right up says "Watcha doin?" I says "I'm lookin for old coins and crap". He turns around and gets in his car and got the hell outa there. Nothing and I mean nothing more or less was said. I dont remember finding much that night but I stayed in there for at least another hour the spot is so good. I gotta get back there some night.

ive had ppl ask in the past .... now being i was young and dumb at one time ive grown old and wise ... if they can get past the dogs more power to them

When I first went to my local park I was so paranoid. And then as it got later in the day here came the squad car, slowing down as he got closer to me. He then yelled out to me and I went over. Of course it turned into oooh finding anything? My dad used to md when I was a kid and would take me all over...my god my heart almost burst from my chest before those words came out of his mouth lol. So yes all was good, he was just doing the usual drive thru the park patrol.

Oh and as far as digging in the yard at night...well that is like a horror movie for me. No neighbors technically as we are in the "downtown" area behind the stores. Now the yard part that I dig in is on the side of the house away from those....BUT the edge of the yard is about a 90 foot drop off and then the woods. So the few times I have done the after dark bit doesn't last cuz I will be concentrating on what I am doing and then a twig snaps somewhere in the darkness nearby lol Then the night bugs will go quiet. and then I will hear something else. Yes I have shamelessly popped up from my digging and sprinted back to the house numerous times...and then made my husband go back out with me so I can retrieve my detector. :tard:
