No idea here but I like it....not seen that variant yet but I am sure someone will tell you more.

Welcome to Tnet from Mississippi.

It is listed on page 396 in Alberts book as WI 23.

Thanks, does it say anything about rarity?

It gives it an R value of 6 which .. according to the book at the time of publication, means it is very rare with only 3-5 known specimens.

Yes, I see the GW initials. Wow! I've never seen that variety posted before. Congrats.

I can not locate this particular button in the RECORD OF AMERICAN UNIFORM AND HISTORICAL BUTTONS BICENTENNIAL EDITION, BY Alphaeus H. Albert. Are you sure that it a GW button? More buttons were produced in 1879 for the centennial. In 1902 the army had several buttons that look very similar, but the shield seems to be a little longer before the V.

it's around 22-23 mm in diameter or 9/10 of an inch. It is around .075 inch thick (1-2MM). Thanks for the help so far!

Can you look on page 396? Creskol mentioned it was on that page.

Congrats on digging that bucket list button
