Just wanted to give you all a shout living along the Gulf to batten down the hatches and keep a close eye on Gustav. As of 11AM 8/29, half the computer models project a Texas landfall while the remainder show a Louisianna/Mississippi landfall. The later of those is not good news for us in the Panhandle since most major storms we receive here are originally forecasted to hit Louisianna and they make a last minute turn :-\. To make matters worse, my metal detector is dead and has been sent off to Minelab for repair. ;D

Let's all put some hope and prayer into making Gustav less powerful than they are forecasting!

If I had a waterproof dtector, i would be staying at a cheap motel in the panhandle and getting my wetsuit and flippers ready!

:icon_pirat:

Found dead with detector in hand and jewelry in scoop!

LOL..there's no such thing as a cheap motel here until October, but if you can swim you could always come ride out the storm with myself or Relicdude07. ;D . Looks like he's found me a MD to use after the storm passes so we'll be hitting some spots pretty heavy as soon as the rain stops.

;D Get ready for the surface finds :o Colonial bottles and coins right on the banks  :D :D :D

Pcolaboy did you ever see the UWF students working in Pensacola Bay? They claim to have found a new ballast pile. http://www.uri.edu/artsci/his/mua/project_journals/wf/wf_8-26.shtml.

They actually found the "Brick Wreck" last year but never really released much information about it until now (go figure). One of the grad students that I met told me that they are fairly certain its the remains of a small schooner that was taking bricks from one of the brick yards on Escambia Bay downstream to Pensacola to be shipped out. He said it is believed to be from the late 1850's. One of the ballast dumps they're checking out is actually one that I put them on last year. I'm pretty certain it was just a ballast dump and not a wreck since we did alot of checking with my friend's Garret PI detector in the area around the pile.

There are so many colonial wrecks yet to be discovered that will eventually be making more news in the coming years. I know of at least 17 Colonial British, 9 Colonial Spanish, and 3 Confederate, 1 Union, countless smaller craft and several other post civil war merchant ships awaiting discovery - just in Pensacola Bay alone. Relicdude and I have been looking for evidence of a wreck in Perdido (Lost) Bay that allegedly gave it its name. More to come on that later hopefully.

Kendra Kennedy's thesis on the waterfront maritime heritage should be an interesting read.

There are approximately 12 or so decent maritime archaeology thesis available in the reference section of the UWF library - I'm certain many, many other have been written. A few of them are excellent while the others are pretty good. The UWF Graduate Program website has a few listings of the ones available for viewing in the library but none of them are available electronically. If you happen to see one of interest let me know and I can get down there to photocopy one.

Starting to toss some patio furniture around :-\ They say 20- 30 ft seas :o Ready-set-go

Unless you have your own wind meter like i do.I wouldnt depend on NOAA or a news media to tell you what wind speed is.I was on my boat in sebastian all during FAY till it went further north. We were watching the news and they all said the wind near the eye was 50-70 mph.I was on the edge of the eye with my digital wind meter. This meter isnt some cheapo unit.It sells for well over $500.During the whole storm the wind never got above 22 knots. Most of the time it was 15 gusting to 22 knots. There was hardly any wind damage in florida except due to a few tornados that spun up real quick then vanished with in minutes.

Hey Boys anchor down....How is Gustav trearing you guys? I hope everything goes well for both of you...... play it safe!!!!

Glad to hear Gustav hit land as a two vs a 4 or even 3.... watching the news... she is packing some wind, but not as bad as they expected.

Hope everyone's home down that way makes it out just fine and everyone can return home soon.

For those with detectors...get out to the beach as soon as it's safe to do so and show us all those wonderful finds!!! LOL

I'm watching Hannah now....they are saying Georgia to the southern coastline of NC....but it will stir up the waters along the VB coast and Outer Banks. If she hits in this area...I hope it's before next Friday...cause I am off on Friday and then I can hit the beach and see what the seas stirred up!!!

My folks live in Baton Rouge. So far, it's not too bad.

Still have some gusty winds at 8PM Monday since we're on the trailing edge but certainly nothing like they got to the west of here in Louisianna/Mississippi.

Some excitement did occur this weekend apart from the storm - my 5 year old came down with a minor case of pneumonia following a week of strep throat :o. The worst part was that my wife spent 6.5 hours at the E.R. - he'll be just fine thankfully.
