According to the proofmark, being a handgun, it could be as old as 1846 which probably makes more sense with this piece. Scroll down to #9.

mrs.o - The gentleman in the link you provided is still working on compiling his list and is off in some of his information.

Ok - like I said - maybe it was wrong - I was just looking for a spot that had the proofmarks - because I was pretty sure it was Belgium.

Is that an assault weapon? Seriously, I believe 1968 is correct on the picture of the complete pistol. It is a replica or copy of the original. I did not say fake. I myself buy firing replicas of Civil War martial weapons, because I cannot afford the originals. Before I forget GREAT FIND!!!!!

No, its a mid-19th century muzzleloading Belgian boot pistol. I seriously doubt that its a repilica. He didnt purchase it like you did. He found it with his metal detector. Better pics would be cool but the reason it has preserved all these years is because its brass. The steel hammer is rusted and the wood has rotted away. If you like to purchase cheap replicas, that is your business but that scenario doesnt fit here. The 1968 in the link is obviously a typo or in error.

Absolutely! That must have been a fairly common pistol back then as a few of my friends have dug it.....only in pre-1850 sites.

It was a cheap single shot boot gun from the Liege gun works of Belgium (star) and must have been common. Not a replica.
