Gun Hammer & The woods is "cleaner"

Well, yesterday I paid another visit to the same area of the woods that I dug the six bullets a few days ago.
I worked slowly down the hill and gridded areas off the best I could around the pines and fallen branches.
My first recovery was some camp lead, followed by another 3-ringer. I then moved a little ways away to an open area and dug a Williams cleaner bullet. I turned around and looked up the hill and noticed that this open area I was standing in looked to have been a road/path through the woods from days gone by. Only a few small saplings are on the path now, and I can see the deeper ruts where wagon wheels would have worn down the path.

After I had a 3-ringer and a Williams cleaner within 20 minutes I was feeling kind of proud of myself, so I texted Quindy (that old guy in Tenn) to rub it in that I was finding more CW lead. :laughing9: Right after I put away my phone I dug the 2nd Williams cleaner only a foot away from the 1st. They were both fairly deep (6”) and found in the high center portion of the path. Now I really slowed my pace down as I worked down the path some more. Soon after I dug a few more Williams cleaners about 15’ from the others. I continued on a bit further and got an iron signal. It was some sort of rusty flat iron plate piece, possibly wagon or cart related? :dontknow: Right next to it I dug up an oddly shaped piece of iron that I thought was junk so I just put into my pouch. After I finished my 2 hour hunt I texted Quindy a photo of my freshly dug finds for the day laying on my "Treasure Towel". Even before I got home to clean them, he asked me if the one piece was iron and if it was a hammer section from a rifle. It was caked with dirt so I had no idea. :icon_scratch:
Sure enough, when I got home and brushed it off, it turned out to be a hammer from a gun. Quindy is actually smarter than he looks folks, and has taken me under his wing when it comes to CW relics. Very much appreciated since I was throwing some CW relics away when I first started detecting, because I had no clue what they were. :BangHead:

My 2 hour hunt ended with: A gun hammer, 4 Williams cleaners, one 3-ringer, buck balls, & camp lead.

There were more iron signals in the area where I dug the hammer, so you can bet I’ll be back there very soon.

Thanks for looking Folks,
ModernMiner

Re: CW Rifle Hammer & The woods is "cleaner"

Your hammer is from a left hand lock, which means it's more likely from a double barrel shotgun. Pretty cool find!

Super nice finds! I know there's a CSA buckle somewhere in that area. When you find it let me know, and I'll send you my snail mail address! :laughing7: Breezie

Re: Gun Hammer & The woods is "cleaner"

That is way cool stuff man! Great saves there! Quindy is a wealth of knowledge.

Re: Gun Hammer & The woods is "cleaner"

It is a left hand hammer for a breach loading shotgun. The breach had the firing pin in it and it stuck out the back. The flat surface of the hammer hit the firing pin and hence the primer in the cartridge. Likely the gun had Damascus barrels. All of those I ever repaired were Damascus steel barrels. Gun from the 1890's to 1910 range, not CW era. Neat find none the less.

Re: Gun Hammer & The woods is "cleaner"

You are having a blast at that place you had almost written off and doing quite well As Breezie said, there may be a CS buckle there but more likely a U.S. box plate. Stay at it. Confederates used shotguns in the early part of the war. Hey, those dropped CS shotgun slugs go for $50 each so keep your eyes open. WTG, Q.

Dman, Josh, & I may make you an honorary member of the Tennessee Trio!!!

George,
You're the best! Thank you so much for that ID. Although not from a CW gun, I guess it's still a neat find.

Written off? No way, I haven't even been to the back of the property and have been detecting there for 4 years now. ;D I have such a short window during the year to detect it though between the NC heat, snake, ticks, and then hunters. :'(
It really has been a special place. Where else can you out for your lunch break and come back with CW relics? :dontknow:
I would love to dig a plate out there no matter which side it is from.
I'll try to get back out there on Sunday and see if I can uncover some more hot spots.
I think the Tenn Trio needs to pay me a visit once Dman has healed.
Looking forward to listening to you on the American Digger radio show on Monday at 9:00pm. :headbang:
Thanks for your help Q,
Dug

Lunch break?
When you sent me those pics on the cell phone at 9:30 this morning I thought you were out hunting first thing on a breakfast break! :D
Congrats on more nice finds from that spot!
You just never know what you will find out there.
That gun hammer is unique!
Go easy on Q monday. ;D

Rob,
That's because I sent you the pictures the next morning. I wish I could detect for breakfast too. :laughing9: There is always room for more iron in the diet.
Load up the shaggin' wagon and make a trip down here to help me detect this place. "ROAD TRIP!!!"
Have a great weekend Rob. I hope you are getting all of those chores checked off your list. More painting for me tomorrow. :crybaby2:

Thanks MP. I've waited all summer to be able to get back out into these woods. I have been uncovering small isolated areas of bullets and melted camp lead over the last few years on this property but really have only hit a fraction of it so far. I was hoping to find some buttons sooner or later out in the woods with the lead. Most of the buttons have been found closer to the house area though. :dontknow:

I just ordered another 5 of those towels yesterday. PM me if interested in getting one. I order navy blue with red lettering, and bright orange with white lettering (great color if you are detecting in the woods).

Nana,
We may have to hold a 2nd Annual Relic Buddies event again in 2012 so we can all get together and hunt this place better. I'll pick out a special dress. :icon_queen: :love1: LOL.
