Does the thick end look or feel like it has been broken? The broken end of a small crowbar comes to my mind. I think you may have a stumper there.

I thought that end looked broken as well. A coat hook is what came to my mind... not quite the same shape as the ones I had a tendency to break as a kid, but same idea.

it looks more like part of a metal snap hook. these are make of many different metals depending on their use. here is a pix of one made of zinc.
