Controversial gun legislation cleared a key Senate hurdle Thursday, as lawmakers voted 68-31 to start debate on the package which includes expanded background checks and new penalties for gun trafficking.

Senate Democrats, joined by 16 Republicans, were able to overcome an attempted filibuster by GOP senators opposed to the current bill. Those senators could still slow-walk the debate, but the Senate will eventually begin votes on amendments -- one of which is considered crucial to winning support for a final vote.

Though the bill cleared a 60-vote hurdle on Thursday, supporters will likely have to corral another 60-vote majority when it comes time to call a final vote, which Democrats acknowledged is a heavy lift.

The White House called Thursday's tally an "important" but "early milestone," as both sides of the issue prepare for a grueling debate.

The amendment likely to be at the front of the line is one from Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., which would scale back the call for universal background checks. The plan would expand checks to gun-show and Internet sales, but exempt certain personal transactions.

The National Rifle Association and other gun-rights supporters voiced concern about the new proposal, saying it still goes too far. But the plan, offered by two lawmakers who are at the conservative end of their respective parties, could help ease opposition ahead of a final vote.

If the bill ultimately passes the Senate, it would still have to pass the Republican-dominated House.

"The hard work starts now," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said after Thursday's vote.

He assured Democrats that a proposal to renew the assault weapons ban and a ban on high-capacity magazines would get a vote as an amendment, though it was dropped from the main bill amid intense opposition. The main bill also includes a measure to increase school safety funding.

Reid lost two Democrats in Thursday's vote -- Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., and Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, both lawmakers from states with a strong tradition of gun ownership.

More than a dozen Republican senators for days had threatened to hold up the bill Thursday. They voiced concern that the proposal -- namely, the background checks provision -- would infringe on Second Amendment rights and impose a burden on law-abiding gun owners. They also expressed frustration that, while Manchin and Toomey touted their compromise measure, the bill on the table Thursday did not yet include that. Rather, it included a stricter background checks provision.

"Because the background-check measure is the centerpiece of this legislation it is critical that we know what is in the bill before we vote on it," Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky.; Ted Cruz, R-Texas; and Mike Lee, R-Utah, said in a statement. "The American people expect more and deserve better."

Thursday's vote follows an intense week of lobbying by gun control advocates, including the families of the victims of the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. That shooting prompted calls at the state and federal levels for new gun legislation.

Advocates like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns group are likely to spar intensely with the NRA and conservative lawmakers in the coming days as lawmakers debate the bill and advance to a final vote.

I wonder if Bloomberg is preparing for a presidential run? He certainly seems to be raising his profile?

Keep writing your reps , we have emailed out at least 30 emails between wife and I the last 10 days, I made it clear I am watching how they vote and how they voice their opinions.

I will actively campaign in social media against any representatives in Florida that vote for these attacks against our 2nd amendment and I said so in my emails.

I am proud to say that neither of Florida's Senators voted with the traitors...

Do you have a list of the 16 republicans. I heard that the NRA is talking about supporting a compromise. Will you support anything that the NRA supports?

I do not support any universal background checks or any new gun control laws violating the 2nd amend... This fight is far from over....

Much like the Rep party has been infiltrated and the Dem party has been converted, I feel that any big entity could start to change by the threat of annihilation. But what we need to do is take back from within.

We know that some claim to be a Republican because they are trying to change and dilute the party,, look at your ex Gov. and Spectre. When they are found out they go back to the true party of their belief for solace, to be discarded.

I think some self acclaimed Reps on this site should take notice of the lefts ability to throw them away after they outlive their usefulness.

I heard they will support background checks in return for taking assault weapons ban off the table. That's the latest behind the scenes. A few other progun orgs are preparing their own "no compromise" campaigns looking to take members away from the NRA if the sell out.

You hearing the same thing?

I'm just hearing excuses! :)

Incrementally chipping away at the 2nd Amendment has been the agenda of one political party for most of the 70-plus years of my adult life. The old song keeps being sung by different singers. Nothing proposed will do anything to prevent any low-life piece of human debris from committing carnage, it will only further a political agenda of infringing upon the rights of law-abiding Americans through the appalling exploitation of a tragedy. It has nothing to do with Newtown. It has everything to do with a longtime political agenda and control.

I wish I could say what I want too, but then again lets debate more, derail, put down, up is down left is right truth is a lie. The hell with the constitution, the hell with the bill of rights, the hell with freedom, or any thing else that sets us apart from the rest of the world throughout all of history. Why should we pay any attention to law? American law by the way.
The rest of the world wants us on their level because they can not rise to ours. And I'm tired of not saying so, Its the bill of rights, not the bill of privileges, so get with the program.0
So please put us down, say we are wrong, say we are right wing extremists, say what ever you will.
Because:censored:and:censored:and:censored:and further more, you all aint nuthin but a buncha :censored:!
have nice day!

This fight is not over by any means, it has to pass out of the senate then go to the house which is controlled by Rep....I continue to contact my reps and I am active in the socal media getting others to contact their reps as well as my firends too. I have shown them how to do it via the pc so they are writting theirs too... Between wife and I we have easily sent out 30 emials to reps in the last 10 days expressing our opinions and warning our votes will be based on how their votes go... If others are doing it it will make a difference....

Picked up 300 more .45 rounds this week they were out of 9mm but had .45......:icon_thumright:

As we Pro 2nd Amendment members have said many times , we want the FACTS , good or bad Dano , coming out of Washington . Now it's time to turn up the heat on some politicians . Not only do we expect them to uphold thier OATH & OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS , we'll make sure they understand they will be replaced next term if they do not . Casey & Toomey in my state ? Pack your bags boys !

But you know nothing about it, it is just reaching the senate debate now, it has to pass senate, blue slip can be used if they tack on any fed fee for BG checks , if it gets out of senate then it goes to the house that rep control...

Battle is s long ways from over, current version will make criminals out of family members selling to family members or friends..

Even if it somehow passed who is going to enforce it, local law enforcement has already said they will not enforce any new fed gun laws and Supreme Court has already ruled feds can not force locals to do their work...

Long way from over but I think a good thing it at least makes it too the floor for debate. Do you? Let each side make their points and let a vote be taken.

No it is not a good thing, here is the thing with rights, they're not supposed to be debated or voted on, that is why they are called RIGHTS...

You don't debate or vote on a right...... A right can never be taken away, only a privilege and last time I looked it wasn't titled "Bill of Privileges..
