Have you ever thought to yourself, "Darn! Another entire box full of new 2013 dimes! I wish I didn't have to open every roll and dump them."

Well now you don't have to open even one roll. This is what I do and it works 80% of the time.

Step 1: Receive a full box of unwanted 2013 dimes

Step 2: Drive to a bank you don't belong to

Step 3: Go up to a teller and start telling her your story

Step 4: The Story:

Me: "Excuse me Miss; I am in a serious bind and I'm hoping you can help me out. I have an event i'm on my way to which involves a game we play. We sell new rolls of dimes for $10 each and play a "Bingo" type game with the dates on the dimes. Whoever has the most dates we call out in their roll wins prizes. After the game all the dimes are collected and donated to the event.

Teller: (looking at the box) I see, well what's the problem?

Me: I ordered this box from my bank and as I was parked at a light I was looking at the box and noticed that every roll is made up of brand new 2013 dimes. This isn't going to work for the game as the dimes are all the same date. I am going to be screwed if I can't find a new box as we won't be able to play. I was hoping I can exchange this box for one with random dates.

Teller: Do you have an account here?

Me: No I do not. I am not from around here and my bank's closest branch is over 50 miles away. I was hoping you can help me out and exchange the box with dimes that have a mixed date. It would really help me out of a jam. The event is in a couple hours.

Teller: Let me see what I can do.

Teller: (brings out a brand new box)

Me: Thank you sooo much! You really saved me there!!

Score!!

This works on in every bank I've tried except for the ones that you absolutely NEED an account for any exchange of money. Which by me is Roma and First Colonial. Sometimes I feel bad like I am some major scam artist pulling off some kind of a scam, but then I think it is just a box of dimes and no harm to anyone. It's not a scam where something illegal or immoral is taking place. So I am fine with my actions. I am a huge believer in Karma and I thought this my bring some bad Karma my way for lying, but the last bank I did this in also had a 1964 half in the tray (which I scored), so I believe Karma is ok with it! :tongue3:

Anyway, I hope this helps with saving time and travel for people that pick up full 2013 boxes!

Why bother lying? I've walked in to banks and flat out told them that I collect coins and a box full of 2013's is useless to me. Every bank I've asked has exchanged them for me, and only one was reluctant to do so. I've even exchanged a box for a bag from a coin counter before - that bank hand rolled their own coin and was thrilled to death that I exchanged their loose coin for my tight machine rolls.

yeah, i try not to "bend the truth" too much, usually i'll just go to a bank and ask if i can swap out for different boxes. as long as the box is unopened, they are usually fine with it, although the banks I deal with don't have to accept boxes from customers once they bought them even from another branch. At least that's what I am told.

I tried that. The banks I do not belong to say I need an account. The banks I belong to say that boxes of coins are mainly for business accounts and I would need to open one for them to continue selling me boxes. That's why I turned to the dark side.

Whenever I get a box of new coins I:
1) go and exchange it at a bank in which I have an account at. There are two of these branches that are close to my house and that I have a good relation ship with the tellers. My family has about ten checking and savings accounts at this bank so I usually don't have any trouble.
2) Go to another bank that I have a good relationship with, preferably a large branch. This seems to work fairly often seeing as a lot of the tellers know me and the even give me boxes when I ask. To them swapping a box is better than selling me a box that will cause them to have to order more boxes sooner.

Have done this a few times, at different branches where I don't have an account... works better if the box is opened...
"My buddy is a sore loser and lost a $250 bet... he was going to dump these all in a bag but that was too much work for him... he got lazy and just paid me like this." I usually make it a local sports team bet, talk sports for a couple minutes, then walk out with cash to try again...

I'm just straight up and say I ordered these at another bank. I look for silver and old collectible coins, and 80% of the time they take the brand new box of coins.

Good advice, except don't EVER mention silver unless the teller has mentioned it first.

Usually when I pick up my dimes/pennies I ask the teller "no new bright sparklers please" providing they are not the totally enclosed Brinks boxes, but the ones with the holes to see thru. My tellers mostly look first before processing the transaction.
