Guatemalan Gold

Hello. I live and work in Guatemala since March of 2011. Someone recently got me excited about the possibility of finding gold where I live. A friend gave me some panning equipment, and a prizm 4 metal detector to get me started. Does anyone know about the laws in Guatemala? Will I have a problem getting through customs with panning equipment? Can anyone give any advice about panning for gold in Panajachel Guatemala?
