Help PBK! I found this in my trinket box tonight, not sure but might have been a gift from Tinpan, I might have dug it up. I thought it was just a common button but after cleaning it up a bit it looks like it was gold gilt. The back says MILLER, RAYNER & HAYSOM LP. Bad pic but I think the front says GUARD. National Guard button? Coast Guard button? Looks a little old, but I dont know.............. :)

Could the letters be CUNARD? It looks very much like one of the older Cunard Steamship Company, Ltd. uniform buttons— specifically, the variety listed as #92/26 in Van Court's Transportation Uniform Buttons, Vol. III - Maritime & Aviation.

"Miller, Rayner & Hayson" is a 20th century mark. The firm had operations in both London and Liverpool, and very likely (although I can't confirm it) also in Birmingham, where there are many British button makers. According to Tice, some of their buttons were actually made in the U.S. Their mark also appears on swords.

PBK:
'Cunard' is certainly more likely than 'Guard'; 'Cunard' having six letters versus the five required for 'Guard'; and six images are shown. Doubt that "Guard" would be prefixed or suffixed with only one symbol. Good call.
