Detector(s) used
Garrett AT Pro, Garrett Ace 250
I have the opportunity to buy a 6 year old GTI 2500 with a vibra-probe for 450.00 here where I live. It has been used little and looks new with a case and VCR tape. My question is age a factor on these Metal detectors. I noticed the 2500 has been on the market for many years. Have they changed any from the first year production to the ones that are sold today..I don't want to buy it and then find out it is outdated or problems occur after so many years even if the detector has not been used...What is a fair price for this machine and probe? I use a ACE 250 with a sniper coil now and it does a good job but depth is limited.

A couple of years ago, Garrett introduced a new chip into the GTI 2500 which gives much better stability in high mineralized ground. Last year, Garrett eliminated the "Treasure Talk". Your machine probably has the older chip, which works fine in many places. You probably have the older white coil. That coil was replaced about 4 years ago, with a black one, which is a little more stable. The Vibraprobe and GTI 2500 don't make a good combination. The probe interferes with the detector, and the detector sounding off prevents the Vibraprobe from shutting off.

I think the deal is not bad, but get him to drop the price without the Vibraprobe. The GTI 2500 will get better depth then the ACE 250. It has a nice deep true all metal mode. The detector can also be ground balanced in this mode for even better depth. The best feature of course is the sizing ability it has. The GTI 2500 is a great coin shooter and also does a fair job relic hunting also.

The GTI 2500 still is a fine detector with the addition of the new chip. Listen to John's advice on the GTI 2500.

How can I get a newer chip and how much would it cost? Is it something I can install myself..

You have to send it in to get the chip installed at the factory. I sent mine in for a new coil and they put the chip in and didn't charge me for it. I don't know how much it costs now. I liked the treasure talk feature. It was like having a hunting buddy with you with a nice soothing female voice. I didn't know they had dropped it, but it they did some other upgrades in its place so be it. A small coil for trashy areas is a good investment too and comparatively speaking Garrett coils are not that expensive. I think $450 is a good buy unless it was drug behind a pickup down a gravel road!.. Monty

i also like the treasure talk,i do not use it in the search mode but in the target id mode, with it you do not have to look down each time.
