I am learning the machine and have been out only a few times. Man this thing does pretty good. I have never found nickels until now. i even found a 1891 V Nickel at 5-6 in.

I have been using coin and now jewelry mode. I'll get alerted to a target then i try to image it and a lot of times it will go 12+ inches and largest dia. Many times it will also flip out like a telephone ring: Brrrrrrt.... weather imaging or just hunting..I'm wondering if that means it's goofed up, sensing iron or maybe to hot on the sensitivity.

todays conditions were wet soil and i was getting down to half and then quarter battery life, hunting with sensitivity anywhere from 5-9. any help is greatly appreciated.

The Coin belltone you hear is to alert you to a higher conductive target like a coin. Although it can also mean a large target is to close to the coil. It always helps to turn back the sensitivity to about 2/3's and not run it at Max. Max also really gets you less depth because the coil is seeing more minerals and a deep coin can get lost in the signal. Check the imagining of the target so as to not waste time on none coins.

That one is a piece of cake...

The only problem you have is your pinpointing isn't dead on and you may be a little close. Lift the coil a couple more inches and take your time and the reading will get better. Also remember other metal can affect your image.

PS... Try to get away from the imaging and go by sound. Imaging is simply a crutch and anyone who really knows the detector shouldn't need it or use it.

I'm learning, especially that it's not a perfect system. I do however find it really cool when things go as indicated on the screen. Today i found a 1900 Indian head penny as well as a bunch of wheats. I keep dreaming of silver and gold but find myself not willing to take the chance on an iffy signal today. I'll have to get over that...

It's a cool machine but I don't see a real use for the threshold yet, and wonder if i may be missing out on something there?

No you are not missing anything, the threshold seems to make very little difference because of how the signal is processed and If you prefer silent search go for it.

the Brrrtt you're hearing is an overload indication. Belltone ring is indicating Higher conduction metal ( coin)
like Sandman said.
i found also that Jewelry mode for trashy areas worked best. I like to use all-metal in non trashy areas as it'll drive you bonkers with trash otherwise. Since this detector only has several tone variations, I started using constant imaging instead of only pin-point imaging. you have this extra feature-- makes sense to use it. Its very believable up to 6-8", but be aware of its limitations!! If not directly over object, imaging size will be different. Always look at signal depth and strength, along with the image size.
Its fun to see the size before digging. 12" depth and maximum size readings is were the fun begins-- this basically means its beyond detectors ability to capture size---- OR its very big. So-- dig, dig, dig!! LOL
Good luck-- -good detector for the occasional user like ME!!
