Gti-1500 threshold question for depth

I have a question about threshold,I have heard of changing the depth of detection by changing the threshold on certain detectors.How does this work,I thought the threshold was just to adjust the light hum barely audible from the detector.Is there some kind of supertuning trick here that I dont know? I dont know alot about detector circuitry but I am very technical if someone can explain,if there is any explanation that is.
