Grunter's and Wonga's of the Long Gully Cycle Club and bike store.1875-1925,

Hi All, Winter down under and still getting plenty of rain,Over the past few weeks i have been on a large block .The block is been cleared for a new building but due to the weather the construction has been delayed.Found a trash pit and privy pit and lots of scatterings.

History As most families of the hard rock gold mining era[1864-1930] were poor employed miners and saw little of the gold they mined for others. With large families most couldn,t afford a horse so bi-cycles became very common. Most were made by local blacksmiths when they has spare time from working at mine sites.

Grunter is a aussie local slang for push bike
Wonga was the type of early bkie made by locals after penny -farthings.

Bike riding became a favourate pass-time for miners on a sunday afternoon and they often had races and distance rides to Pic-nic grounds. The men in each area would form their own clubs the first pic is of the local long gully bike club circa 1880's.Bike racing is still a very popular sport to this day.

Found some really interesting relics

WW 1 russian sweat-heart pin made from a coin
WW 1 german wound pin silver
1890.s silver fob
1880's pottery meat pot lid [embossed]
1890's german pottery dolls head
1920's 6 inch lead battle ship
1950's firemans button
and few bottles and odds

Made in the Staffordshire Region of England c. 1880 This Victorian 3 1/2 " wide x 1 3/4 " tall covered ceramic earthenware container was made during Victorian times for preserved ground meats. Potted meat or meat potting began as a way to preserve meat prior to the advent of refrigeration. Much like MRE (meals ready to eat) still used by today's army, the food had a long shelf life and was more or less edible.

Re: Country Fire Authority-Victoria
CFA is one of the world’s largest volunteer-based emergency services. There are around 58,000 volunteer members supported by over 400 career fire fighters and officers and more than 700 career support and administrative staff.

Situated in Victoria, there are 2.5 million people and 150,182 square kilometres of land in the CFA area. This area includes more than 980,000 homes, and covers all of rural Victoria, and the provincial cities and towns (except State forests and National Parks).

Re: Grunter's and Wonga's of the Long Gully Cycle Club and bike store.1875-1925,

hi all, thanks for the replies. With fewer people and large areas to hunt, i have to use local history to find the best places to hunt. That takes most of hunting time just researching.Sunny this morning so will go out the local creek and see if i can find some gold in the natural creek traps.Had 2 inches of rain yesterday. Then i,m of too the old diggings for some relics as theres no much gold has been mded to death.I will be not the only one out.Seen a few city folk in the area with brand new mds this week.
