Well its getting late in the season and it was really cold today, the puddles stayed frozen, the frost in the ground was hard to punch through in places and the wind was bitter. Me and Iron Patch had to bundle up pretty good and it was hard to stay and keep warm.
We had every intention on heading back to the field we scored some nice buttons in last week for a reprise. It wasn't to be, we were beaten there today by hunters who were setting up for a hunt too. We decided to move on, so, in the words of IP; " They got guns, we got detectors, who's going to win?"

We got on the road again and headed out for a famililar area and ended up in a couple of fields we hunted before without finding any new sites to pick on. Although the sites were thin there were still a few finds.
My first signal was what I thought was merely a worn smooth shilling, but after cleaning I saw it was counterstamped with SPD, nice to see something new again! Also, a token I've never found before, a 1810,1 quarto from Gibraltar, with a lion and castle key, saying,Payable at James Spittle's, new one for me!
Other than a few buttons and pieces of field trash, the only other thing to show up was the lion head, looks like something from a drawer pull or something like that, it's a neat piece.

Here's hoping the weather cooperates and we get to get at least one more shot at something good!

Nice finds IH, sad that you and IP didn't get to hunt your new site but it looks like you all did good anyway. Really like the lion- do you know what it is made of? Not sure about the "S P D" counter stamp but it looks to be recent. Maybe something from a 'salted' club hunt, don't know if they do that there but still a nice find. HH

The lion is thick cast brass, the counter stamp was added to a smoothed coin no doubt, and where we found it was a legitimate colonial site, too far from anywhere to salted there

Well, you coulda told them you could return the bullets that missed. LOL

Ya you made the wise move- guns vs. detectors, unless you have that detector loaded with something we don't know about! Put a back hoe on your Christmas list, that should cover the frozen ground in winter! Congrats and HH!

I'm sure the buttons will wait a little longer, the geese won't hang around for too long. If we don't get another swing this fall we will return in the early spring

I'm amazed what you came out with from there. I wasn't anywhere even close to the though of posting entering my mind.

It just hit me where we could have also went, and you brought it up recently. It's on the South side, West.... we were out in the raining hunting one place and talked to the owners, then at the other field I talked to the owner in the truck. There was 3 fields we hunted, and the best seemed to be in the middle. Anyway, that's not a good description, but it might be enough because you did mention this place. Anyway, I would definitely go back around there, or would have!

Iron/ over iron/ under. You win every time. That's going to be my next detector.

That sounds like a very interesting shilling, which are not found very often to start with.

We will keep those fields in mind for next time
Crazy that just a few little things kinda made something!

Hey, that's not a bad day at all, I'd take a counter stamped coin anyday! Hoping the temps this week might keep the frost away a little bit longer!

Nothing wrong with those finds and worthy of a post...we were looking at heading out today but tomorrow looked warmer...

Looks like some good stuff to me. The lions head is pretty cool. And the counter stamped coin is a great find. Hope I come across something stamped one day.

nice finds and well earned, one good thing about the guns, they will keep others out until you all get back.

Howdy!
You have some really nice finds. That token can't be very common, nice silver too. Besides, any friend of B.B.R. is a friend of mine.
Best of luck,
Phil

B B R is that big bad Rick?
Not certain of the rarity of that token. Perhaps just uncommon and that's all, but it is a new one to me

Braving the colds for those finds keeps it uplifting, nice going on the counter stamped.

On the upside warmer weather is coming out your way. :)
