I joined a recent page on Facebook.com the other day, I was surprised to see so many metal detecting enthusiasts in my home state! I noticed a recent post by Larry Hawkins about getting together and finding some Civil War spots to go hunting at. Soon, it turned in me, Brett and Larry all going out to this really old church in Hurricane, WV.
We were all acquainted around 1:30 in the afternoon, then we all got a plan together and started sweeping the flat part of the church's land. My first signal was a 1902 Indian Head penny, I thought this was going to be a wonderful site with many more older coins to come. To my dismay I only found a few modern coins after that. Larry had found many finds too, including two wheat pennies and the bottom half of a lead soldier (I'll let him post about that if he is on here).

Brett Kirby found some various finds also, but no old coins (to my knowledge). He is actually new to the hobby, only two years he had stated. He had a Garrett AT Pro, which might be my next metal detector! Here is a photo he took of the old church bell that was used during 1860-1877.

Here is a Google Earth photo of what the church looks like in 2012.

Here is a map overlay of what it would have been in (I believe 1987 or 1990????)

Now for more detail on my finds, I was finding a lot of pennies as usual. Found a couple of modern pennies and dimes. Also found a lot of do-dads, which seemed to be fairly old ones. One of the things I'll mention is this very big clock cog, or maybe it was a part to something else, never know. I had also found my nuts! :laughing7:
