Found this little bugger in South Alabama at an old mill site. The site has two very distinct layers of finds. I've found mercs and SLQs 3-4 inches down, and a two real and extremely worn seated dime down about 7-8 inches. This relic was 6-7 inches down.

It seems to be made of pewter, and is octagonal. The image is of a very British looking griffin. The edges seem awfully rough to be a button, and it's a bit thick and heavy. I'm sort of leaning towards a wax seal, but that might be wishful thinking. I'm probably going to find out its a blazer button from the fifties...

Any ideas out there?

Well if it is a button, it certainly won't be from the 50's...cool find, I will dig about a little.

Looking about it would seem that the button is 17th-18th C...The griffin was quite a popular theme during this period, the greyish part on the reverse looks to be the squashed loop.

We'll I sure hope you're right SS...that would make it at least 100 years older than I thought, and pretty darned ancient for my area!
