Went out exploring with Greylock today in Southen Vermont. The day started slowly, but our last cellar hole turned out to be pretty good. We each found a few buttons and Greylock found this nice Spanish silver. I think it's a 1746 Mexico Mint 1 Reale. The last two digits of the date a tough to see. It also looks like it has a plug in it or may have been used as a button.

Nice recovery, and a very interesting coin. If you can post pics after cleaning the dirt off I may be able to help narrow down the date. This "milled pillar" variety of spanish silver was minted between 1732 and 1771, but if more info can be revealed (like the assayer's initials and the mint) then we might be able to do better on the date.

Thanks Bill, Greylock was having some trouble getting pictures uploaded, which is why I posted it. Hopefully he can get it cleaned up and get some better detail.

Nice! Congrats to you both! Great finds!

NICE JOB !!

Neat coin. Congrats to greylock.

Always a welcome site to see that thin silver with out a reeded edge..
You know its going to be a old..
Congrats.

Just wanted to see if that would upload. Here's the Spanish cleaned up a bit. Thanks Oxbowbarefoot for the help. image.jpg

I clearly see the Mexico City mintmark (the "M" with the circle over it to the left of the date), but can only see an "M" for the assayer initial to the right of the date. For 1733-59 the joint assayers were listed as M-F, and from 1760-72 they were shown as F-M. So guess that's not gonna be of any help in zeroing in on the date a little closer.

Thanks Bill. Here is a better pic of the date but don't think it will help much. Still only my third silver and I'm happy with it. image.jpg
