Hello,
I am new to the forum and to MD. For years, my Father had talked about getting a metal detector but he never got around to it. Last year, I bought him a 63-3013 from Radio Shack. I thought it would help him get out of the house and get some exercise. Since he is in his 70's, walking is a good thing for him to do. He was rather happy with the MD but did not use it.
A friend of his started to do some MD and has had some excellent trips to the local beaches. This seemed to peak my Fathers interest, not for the findings, but as a way to get some exercise. He tried to use the MD but did not get very far with it. Last week, I decided to work with him.
We both read the instructions and started going around the house. We found a ton of old nails, old bits of metal fence, and some old aluminum foil containers where I use to have a dog when I was growing up. We have had quite a bit of fun finding these things. It shows that the MD does in fact work and it allows us to practice and we get to spend some time together.
Now, I have searched the Internet looking for more information about MD and I found this site. I also have been looking to see who else has used the 63-3013, hoping to get some pointers. Aside from e-bay I have not seen anything so I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Has anyone here used this MD before? The instructions are a little vague about switching from VLR(?) to the other settings for determining the type of metal. I understand how to get the MD to be zeroed but to I have to do that process everytime I switch to different modes?
This detector does seem to work. I have found metal up to 6in deep in packed soil. I know there are better detectors out there but is this one good enough to start with?
Thanks,
Wolfe
