Howdy! My name is Jimmy Brown and I am a custom knife and jewelry maker living in Mars Hill NC. I'm a husband and father to a smart, funny and beautiful (just like her mama) 7 year old lil girl, she's a little picker/treasure hunter already! I have been a history buff as long as I can remember. I grew up in Madison county Illinois... kinda weird lol. The area was full of native American history and people found arrow heads etc in the corn field right next to my house! It was right near St Louis in MO and had lots of interesting history to keep me researching. When I was 14 my family up and moved to the mountains of Asheville, NC. I've been here 18 years and won't live anywhere else, this place alone is a treasure! I liked the city of Asheville, but I'm not a city person lol
I moved out here to mars hill and I doubt I'll ever leave! I live just 3 mins from mars hill college and the entire area was important during the civil war. I feel there are lots of places to look here... almost anywhere! That's not even mentioning the history before the civil war including the Native American history here as well! I have researched my area extensively and just in 2018 got a metal detector and started to seriously check some places out. My main hunt is on my parents property, they have 15 acres and are surrounded by mostly uninhabited (currently) land. All over the property are old roads, dug out of the side of the mountain by people, that seemingly lead to nowhere. When I was a younger, my friend and I cleared these old roads for miles! We now walk up and ride 4wheelers, dirtbikes etc. The hills are very steep and it's kind of dangerous getting up, but once there, you are in another world! I found a huge 4' tall 1.5' wide Diamond willow fence post, holding up 100+ year old barbed wire... that was a $300 treasure right there and I still have a 9" wide slice top to bottom my parents hung on there porch. I haven't taken the detector too far up the mountain yet, but I believe there has to be something up there. Why would anyone take the time to create these roads for no reason? It was said to us they were logging roads, but the woods are full of huge old growth trees all long the road? No trees cut except for the ones to make the road. That's a mystery that I plan to solve this coming season, I guarantee there is an old homesite or camp etc up there. My main focus has been an old dump I found near what we call our camp, an area near a creek and trails with picnic tables, shelter, firepit etc. We dug up most of what looks like an old tractor while setting up the camp, several wagon rims, Old bicycle parts, tools,Old plates and pottery etc. I pretty much don't even need the detector in the camp, but it still helps and I can discriminate for the bigger heavier targets etc. I've found a few mercury dimes and other old change, but mostly I've been digging old tools and the like, still very exciting! I'm hoping I can maybe post some photos of the "trash" I've found and get an idea of when this stuff is from. I know it's old, but I'm not sure how old at all. My parents property is mapped out and somewhere listed is a burial ground. We have yet to find that as well, though by the creek and camp, there is a very old fenced in area. The fence is all layed down and there is nothing inside, but the fence is kind of ornate for a random spot in the woods. I've always felt that this could be the burial ground but will probably never know. I'm looking into finding permission to hunt my daughter's school, the oldest buildings on property are from around the 1920's and I'd love to find some dropped lunch money, lol! I'm also looking into doing a search around some of the college and donating any finds to the school, local museum etc. I am currently using a Bounty hunter tracker iv model metal detector, I got on eBay for $50 and it's missing a knob... but it finds metal dang it and I've had a good time with her! I am sure I will upgrade, but I'm a penny puncher and I have to start low lol! Sorry for the rambling, I just figured I better give some of my details and not just a broad stroke... I'm really gonna need some help taking on the hunt I have ahead of me, as well as possibilities in the future! I am going crazy trying to find more info on the "Blankenships buried silver in Madison county NC" treasure that my mom linked me to on this site, it's the reason I joined this particular site as a matter of fact! If anybody knows anything about that, id love to get that topic going, or find a place to start looking anyway! I am an antique dealer as well and have top notch research skills. My family tree is mapped back to the 1590's so I'm not new to genealogy lol. I hope to get involved here, make some friends, share some info, help with research etc! If I can help, I am more than glad to do so! Lord knows I have plenty of questions lol! Thanks and let's chat about treasure! Follow me on Instagram @bonezcustoms!
