'Greatest generation' veterans sweep past barricades at memorial in their honor

'Greatest generation' veterans sweep past barricades at memorial in their honor | Fox News

What was meant to be a final gathering of heroes Tuesday instead became a final victory for dozens of World War II combat vets who refused to let the government's budget battle block a visit to their memorial in the nation's capital.

With bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace," nearly 200 veterans from Mississippi and Iowa swept past barricades and security guards at the World War II Memorial in Washington in order to keep a commitment to visit the site, which was closed today due to the partial government shutdown. The veterans, in their 80s and 90s, were accompanied by Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., a former Marine who earlier vowed not to let the National Park Police keep them from a planned visit to the open-air monument.

"Well, I would have been so down-and-out if I got all the way up here and wasn't able to get in," Navy veteran Oscar Leroy Russell, 90, who is blind after he suffered a stroke, told FoxNews.com.

"I’m not going to enforce the 'no stopping or standing' sign for a group of 90 World War II veterans. I’m a veteran myself.”

- U.S. Park Police officer

Some veterans on hand wiped away tears when they saw a crowd waving the American flag as they came out of their bus.

"These men and women didn't cower to the Japanese and Germans," Palazzo said. "I don't think they're about to let a few National Park Police stand in their way."

Palazzo, who was joined by several other members of Congress, moved the barricades at the memorial and police did not try to stop the veterans' access.

"I’m not going to enforce the 'no stopping or standing' sign for a group of 90 World War II veterans," a U.S. Park Police officer, who declined to give his name, told The Washington Post. “I’m a veteran myself.”

The veterans are traveling as part of Honor Flight, a program that enables World War II veterans to partake in an expense-paid trip to view the memorial. Tuesday's trip is the second-to-last flight, with the last scheduled for November. But prior to their arrival early Tuesday, there was fear that the government shutdown and federal worker furloughs would mean no access to the monuments on the National Mall.

But with lawmakers leading the charge, the American military heroes, some in wheelchairs, surged into the memorial.

"It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission," Palazzo said. “We lined the veterans up along the blockade, we saw an opening and we took it."

Joe Cleveland, of Union, Miss., told The Mississippi Press that he would "be thinking about the many battles that have been fought and thanking all those who were willing to go fight for our country."

Palazzo noted his grandfather, Manuel McCarty, served in World War II at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. Palazzo was 7 years old when his grandfather died and said he sees his grandfather in these veterans.

"I only have a couple of memories of my grandfather," said Palazzo, who has taken part of Honor Flights before. "But each time I see these men, I envision how he'd be."

Congressman Bill Huizenga, of Michigan, told GulfLive.com that "this is the best civil disobedience we've seen in Washington in a while."

Deep that's probably the most work them Congressmen did since
they have been in office, moving the barricades .
I just hope they didn't get there hands dirty.

I'm just glad they got in.

I don't understand how a government shutdown means bringing in barricades to keep people out. This isn't a museum or anything else that needs staff. This is nothing more than an attempt by obama's ilk to inflict pain.

What more could you expect from a control freak:laughing9:

That is what I keep saying! it is simply a dog and pony show. I heard Reid said they had to close down Lake Mead because of the shutdown? How long do think it took to drain that lake?
I wouldn't put that past them, they will do anything to make the optics shine the right way for them.

Been there with Dad.

There was a protest next door, but all was respectful - on both sides.

In fact, one of them asked if I could take a picture of her and my Dad.

No members of Congress were there ......................... all was sincere and respectful.

Jason, you said, "This isn't a museum or anything else that needs staff"
That isn't entirely true. Anyone visiting would need the use of restrooms etc. That would mean staff to keep them clean and stocked. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with taking down the barricades there but what about other places? The national parks were set aside for use by our citizens. If I'm a citizen then why can't I get into Yellowstone or any other park? It's all a big joke. This has been done in the past and it doesn't save a dime, it costs millions to upset the cart and they turn around and pay the furloughed employees anyway. It's all smoke and mirrors for power grabbing.

I agree 100%. I never realized there was a federal highway going through Yellowstone until this last June. I was just trying to get to a campground on the north side of the park and following my GPS. Imagine my surprise when I pulled up to a Parks Service gate where they demanded money (or else I had to backtrack an entire day)!

The national parks SHOULD be ours!

When you turn 65 you can buy life time pass good for all national parks for single $10.00 fee..

Fees to get in help maintain them paid for by the people who actually use them.

I understand that. My complaint was that the entrance IS the only highway for 200 miles. I wasn't even trying to go to the park that day. If I didn't have plans to go to the park at all I would have been really POed.

To be "entitled" to something you would either have had to earn that entitlement or have met the entitlement criteria legally or honestly, without fraud, so I would guess that TH meets the legal criteria to buy that pass and would be considered eligible for other entitlements as well. Now, if he were to LIE about his age, he would not meet the legal criteria for that entitlement. In that case he would be no different than the welfare bums in this country.

Yes, just like every living WW2 vet is ENTITLED to visit the open-air memorial built in their honor.

My mother, anytime I acted as if I was "entitled" to something would remind me:
"You have NO IDEA(!), how LUCKY(!) you are, to be born in America"!

Many I see, that come from oppressed countries, see our freedoms and are in awe of them. They seem to know more and appreciate more, the freedoms we take for granted here, than most natural born citizens.
Had my dad still been alive, I would have wheeled his wheelchair OVER the barricades!
Thank you dad, and all you other vets! There are some of us, that do understand, what you layed your lives down for, bless you!

They are entitled to visit it when ever they feel like it, they are the living survivors and represent all those who gave their all for this country. They are not just visiting it for theirselves but for their buddies who died on Omaha beach, Guadacanal, Anizo, Tariawa, Bulge, Midway, Pearl Harbor, Philippines and all the other places they died fighting for this country.

Obama or any other president has no right to refuse these heroes the right to vist that memorial.....:BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:

What has BO ever given for this country? Nothing, but he sure as heck likes to take things away.......

Love this picture!
