I heard a tapping in my garden today and, after a bit of looking, saw this woodpecker in the canopy of one of my trees. I get quite a few green woodpeckers but not so many greater spotted ones. So I grabbed my camera and took these shots

Hi Chris, the Great or Greater Spotted woodpecker is about 8.5 to 9 inches. It does bore holes into trunks and branches looking for grubs, but nothing like the picture you posted. If I can find some trees where they have bored holes I will take some pics tomorrow
