Hey Guys -

I just happened across this site while searching for Homebuilt Rov's and after browsing the topics I can't seam to leave this one. I think I'm hooked all ready....My birthdays next week and I think I'm going to treat my self to a detector :)? After reading all the reviews and other posts I think I'll end up starting with a ACE 250. It sounds like a good one to start with. The price is right in my range (sort of) I've convinced my self it will pay for its self in the long run right. I hid a dollar in my back yard as a kid and lost the map so if I can find that I figure 198 more finds like that and its payed for? ;D

Anyway just wanted to say cool forum and I probably be asking all kinds if newbie questions as soon as i get it.

Welcome to the forum Steve. Looks like you did some homework making your decision to purchase the Ace250. Seems like it's the favorite on the forum for the best entry level detector for the money!

Hope to see you post some pics of your finds when you get it!!

Welcome to the forum, I have the 250 and love it. So far since June of this year I've found $22 in change but that's detecting only on the weekends for a few hours, so it's definitely possible to pay for itself. The only problem with finding $22 is that most of them were pennies!!

Heres whats going to happen, You'll find somthing or a few somethings but after a while you get attached and can't let them go.
That's me anyway. You're gonna love the rush you get when something shinny pops up out of the ground.

Good luck to ya.

ive been at it since april with my ace and have found $97. in clad, two mercury dimes,4 silver roosevelt dimes, an 1850 large cent,14 wheat cents the earliest being a 1912, 1 gold ring,a silver bar,2 silver earings,1 silver toe ring, various junk jewelry and relics. all sorts of stuff! the ace is a really great machine to get started on. good luck and welcome to the forum!

Well I ended up going with the ACE 250 and it showed up on Saturday. After quickly trying it out in my backyard and finding a rusty screw I went over to my parents house and within about 10 minutes I actually found the 4 quarters I buried about 20 years ago. They were down about 6-7 inches and there was a nail about 2 inches away and I was amazed this actually could tell the difference. It was raining so I didn't get to play for that long but I found a dime and a nickle also. The next day I hit my own yard again and found 6 pennies, 2 were wheaties a 46 and 56 so its a good start for me.

Overall I very happy with the 250, pinpointing is pretty easy and after a bit I could tell the difference between coins and junk without digging. (I dug the junk anyway to see what it was) Being new to this I'm still amazed at the littlest piece of metal this thing picks up even at depth. I dug one signal at 6 inches and it was a piece of metal about the size of a piece of rice. Now I just have to wait till next weekend to hit some parks.
