As some of you may know, I have a collection of Great Seal military buttons. This appears to a very shiny Great Seal cuff button but its backmark says MADE IN ENGLAND. Can this be a military button? Can anyone date it? I just purchased it for a quarter at a military surplus store.

Cy, it may be that this is anodized aluminum? in which case it could be a "Morry Luxenberg/London maker which (because this is a smaller cuff button0 might have the name abbreviated to "made in England'?

Ah, so they made US Army insignia? Yes maybe its aluminum. It appears to be 2 types a metal but the brass back is a bit discolored, the front is pristine.

ADDED: Notice how clear the VDB is with my old cheap floppy disc camera. I dont even have it on full image size. Its about half of the total 1.3 MP.

Nice Dale. Is that a new one for the site? ;D
Yes its a new one. I picked up about 5 new ones today out of a box full of used buttons. Trying to ID it. It the first US Great Seal button I have seen made in England.

Nice button and cool with an addition to the list of Great Seal Buttons :icon_thumright:

British button producers apparently have supplied US military buttons a good way back. On this link Confederate blank backs are explained to be British:

The back is blank on both buttons and may have been made in England. The reason-English producers may have used blank backs to disguise the origin of the button. English support for the Confederacy dropped when it became clear the "War in the South" was lost. Although England was "neutral", producers may have wanted to protect future business and preferred anonymity

Yes, I know Confederate buttons were made in England but I am referring to post-1902 WWI US Army buttons.

Why would English produced buttons have stopped :icon_scratch:

Im asking about the US Army, your link is about Confederates. :) I understand the South didnt have factories. Did England make buttons for the US Army?

Ill tell you a true story. The first (and only) Confederate Navy buttons I ever found back in the late 70's in South Florida said England on the back and I tossed them because I thought they were modern.. :-[ I later went back to the site and retreived them.

Your button seems to indicate they did. The majority of Confederate buttons were produced in the US.

That may be true IS but I am not asking anything about Confederate buttons. Thanks for the information. I am asking about US Army buttons.. specifically like the post 1902 button I posted.

Im googling "Morry Luxenberg/London" now. My button could be a blazer button with Great Seal motiff. :dontknow: But it appears they did make buttons in England for the US Army. I didnt know that. Why does England make US Army buttons? Did England make buttons for the US Army too during the Civil War?

Did "Morry Luxenberg/London" specialize in anodized aluminum buttons?

I didn't know England produced US military buttons during the CW (that's why I posted the info). Don't see why it wouldn't be possible that England produced buttons to a later branch of US military, but I get your point the the two not directly connected.

I wrote the story. It was a trash pile in an torn down trailer park in Lemon City by RR tracks. A pouch with an assortment of buttons and a lock of hair. I gave them to my Mom for safe keeping and she cant find them to this day. When/if we find them, I will post pics.
