One of these days I will get a camera so I can post pics. Until then I can only tell about what I find.
Yesterday I went up to the family farm and did some looking around. The farm was used by the Indians for many years. This farm also was the site of one of the oldest settlements in the county. Just on the edge of the farm is the oldest wagon road in the county. My grandpa always kept the road clean and my cousin does so still today. Less than a mile from the farm is a site where the army had a battle with the Indians prior to settling. On some of the hills there are a few old house places that are on a map from 1862. In fact a company of Union troops stopped for lunch at one of the houses and took the owner prisoner. Down in the brake there is an old well that that my grandpa filled in to keep the cows from falling into it. My grandpa told me this is the well that moonshiners would hide their barrels in to keep the law from finding them. This farm has alot of history behind it so there is alot of great stuff here that can't be seen.
I haven't been up to the farm in awhile and decided to take a look around. I found an old cast iron wash pot in a barn that was used to water hogs back when my grandpa was alive. I dumped the water out of it and it was still in great shape. I walked around to some of the other barns and found all kinds of tack used for plowing with horses. All of it is in pretty good shape except for the leather parts which are stiff. I found an old mill stone that came from one of the old mills that was in use during the Civil War. There are a few old wagon wheels laying about with trees grown up through the center. Some of the hubs still have the original wood. Cottons scales, scale weights and logging tongs hung in an old barn. There is a huge mix of tools, tractor parts and all sorts of items in the old work shop. There is no telling what all is in the pile. Maybe I can get my cousins together and sort through the mess one of these days. I walked around the barn yard looking in every fence row and in the overgrown feed lots. In one of the fence rows I found an old wrought iron fence that has several panels and posts. The gate for the fence is highly stylized. This will look great in my front yard.
I called my grandma and told her what I had found and asked her what I could take. She told me to get anything that I wanted and to come by the house and she would give me another wash pot that belonged to my great grandma. I loaded all of the smaller stuff and plan on returning within the next few days to get the old fence.
My dad and my uncles tell me the my grandpa had a U.S. belt plate, bayonett and a cavalry bridle that he found at one of the old houses that was there in 1862. Noboy knows where this stuff went to, but I bet they are in one of the old barns in amongst some of the tractor parts. It sure would be nice to find these items.

good thing i am using a laptop on a desk, the keyboard would have been ruined by the drool, dang sounds like a nice place to prowl, i think i would be camped out there and digging like crazy, good luck on finding the civil war items, you'r right, they are probably buried in there someplace.

Whooo, Whooo! :o I love finds like these. Where you located? I'll come help ya! ;D No really, finding all those farm tools & such is just amazing...stop & think about em, your grandpa worked hard with these tools. Fantastic finds...hope you find the CW relics.

;) RR

It is 'rare' to make finds such as those, most of the 'Antiques' have been picked up in most places, & are now in 'flea markets'.
Sounds like you have a lot of good hunting ahead.
