NOTE: the title was too long for the post. It should have read “ Great day on campus, Indian, Barber, flat button, silver jewelry as well as gold and silver from a park swimming area”.
I continued my grid pattern of the sport field yesterday. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 on a cloudy day that did rain on me a little, but not enough to stop the hunt. As usual with this field there were loads of can tabs. You have to dig them because they sound the same as nickels, eaten zinc pennies, some of the civil war bullets and gold. If I’m working a grid I’m doing my best not to leave anything good behind so I dig all the mid and high tones and expect to clean up the tabs and can slaw as I go.
I found 48 coins with a face value of $3.23, lots of tabs, some can slaw, a brass screw in cap of some sort I’m not familiar with, a copper jacket bullet, 2 screw in cleats, an IHP, a Barber dime, a flat button and part of a silver pin.
The Indian head is a 1903 and is a little crusty on the front and worse on the back. The signal was weak and the penny was on the top of a 7” plug.
The Barber dime is an 1893 O and was only 3 inches down along the edge of the gravel jogging path. It is badly bent like it was hit by the excavator when they made the path. I could tell by the color when it popped out that it was not a modern dime. It has that dull gray look that shallow silver gets in non acid soil.
The flat button is toasted badly. I doesn’t look like it ever had a backmark and the front looks plain. Probably a cheap button back in the day. The shank is mashed, but it is all there.
The silver pin/broach was a nice surprise. It looks like about half of the original. I listened for the other half, but it didn’t materialize. This half has the receiver and closer to hold the end of the pin.
Most of the soil here is pretty acid. I think the gravel may have changed that up near the path. The rest of the finds were down on the playing field and the acid did a number on them. You can see how bad the back of the IHP and the front of the button are. It takes a toll on the zinc pennies as well. Here are a few of the worst ones. The rest have some pitting on the edges. So any zinc from this field is worthless, but there might be a better target in those holes so you have to dig.
The best day I have had on campus in a long time.
Today I went to a little used park swimming area I usually do once a year. The weather is starting to get cooler so I figured I better get it done while i still can and I’m glad I did.
In 6 hours with the ATPro I managed to find 25 coins with a face value of $3.10, fishing lures, a toy car, a stainless table spoon, fishing sinkers, 2 rings, 3 cheapy earrings, an earring back, a gold heart, a gold cross and a silver earring.
The heart is 14k and is actually an earring with the post missing. It was a 39-40 on the VDI. The cross is also 14k. It is plain and fairly light. It was also a 39-40 on the VDI. The silver heart earring actually has 4 tiny diamonds in it, 2 on the left, 1 in the middle and 1 on the right. The little balls reflect the light to look like a lot more diamonds than there are. It was a solid 64 on the VDI.
Oldies, silvers, and gold, that puts my small streak at 6 hunts in a row with silver (4 of them with gold as well). Only the second Barber and second Indian since my year started on May 1. I’m a happy guy. Thanks for looking, stay safe and may your coil lead you to good things.
